  • Carnival Legend offering a Panama Canal and trans-pacific cruise

Prior to its deployment to Australia in fall 2014, Carnival Legend will operate two unique and exciting cruises – a 13-day Panama Canal cruise and a 23-day trans-Pacific voyage – that will serve to position the vessel for its new seasonal schedule from Down Under.

The 13-day Panama Canal cruise will depart Tampa, Fla., Aug. 17 and arrive in Long Beach, Calif., Aug. 30, 2014. Carnival Legend will visit George Town, Grand Cayman; and Cartagena, Colombia; prior to the Panama Canal transit followed by day-long calls to Puntarenas, Costa Rica; and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Carnival Legend will then operate a 23-day trans-Pacific voyage that departs from Long Beach Aug. 30, arrives in Sydney, Australia, Sept. 22, 2014. In addition to the unforgettable crossing of the equator that includes all the traditional maritime celebrations, the voyage will feature extended visits to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Papeete (Tahiti), Bora Bora and Moorea, French Polynesia; Suva, Fiji Islands; and Noumea, New Caledonia.

The two voyages can be combined to create a one-of-a-kind 36-day cruise that features 10 scenic destinations across three continents.

Prior to these voyages, Carnival Legend will undergo a multi-million dollar renovation that will add an array of innovations that are part of the line’s Fun Ship 2.0 product enhancement program. These include a massive WaterWorks aqua park highlighted by Green Thunder, the steepest and fastest waterslide at sea, the tropics-inspired RedFrog Pub, a full-service sushi restaurant called Bonsai Sushi, and Cherry On Top, a “candy and more store” with various confections, apparel and novelty items. These new offerings complement such popular options as the Serenity adults-only retreat, an expansive health and wellness center, and fun activities and spacious, modern play areas for kids in three age groups.

The trans-Pacific crossing will position Carnival Legend for a seasonal program from Australia that kicks off Sept. 24, 2014, and encompasses eight- to 12-day cruises from Sydney calling at a variety of destinations within the Pacific, including New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji.

I have mixed feelings about this. I know that Australia is a growing market for Carnival but, this takes a ship out of North America and leaves us one short until the Vista is debuted in 2016. The deployment of the Legend to supplement the Spirit makes me wonder if the ultimate intention is to send all 4 Spirit Class ships down under?

If so, I'm sure it would leave a huge number of people disappointed. I can't tell you how many friends of mine have declared the Spirit Class to be their favorite ships in the fleet. With a 41 to 1 passenger space ratio they are the most spacious of all the ships in the inventory and I'm sure that's not going to change when the Vista appears.

Carnival owes their existence to the North American market. I hope they're not turning their back on us in favor of an emerging market...

Sure, the price of airfare can certainly be cost prohibitive for a lot of people, but this really isn’t much different from sending a ship to Alaska or Europe for a season. New itineraries are always exciting and there are plenty of people that would rather visit these destinations with Carnival than any other cruise line. Yes, Carnival will market this to Australians as a “home port” cruise but North Americans will be sailing as well! Now if we just had enough vacation days to take one (or both!) of these repositioning cruises!

I think there's a difference here. It appears that the Legend, like the Spirit, is being transferred to Carnival Australia and if that's the case she's not likely to return!

Also, airfare from LAX to Melborne seems to wobble back and forth between $1500 to $1800, quite a bit more than a flight to Rome out of Houston... around $1050 and trending down.

In my eyes, losing a ship to Australia lessens our options sailing from US ports, the biggest market in the world! Carnival has missed the mark a few times on deployments. That's why there will be no Carnival ships deployed to Europe next season.. the market they anticipated simply wasn't there...

I think “seasonal program” sounds like it’s not going down under forever, but who knows where they’ll send the ship next…
