Add Legally Blonde to the list of Broadway shows heading to the high seas.
Norwegian Cruise Line says the Tony Award-nominated musical will play in the main theater of its next ship, the 4,028-passenger Norwegian Getaway.
Executives at the line made the announcement Thursday during inaugural festivities for the New York-based Norwegian Breakaway, which set sail Sunday on its first voyage out of the city.
A sister to the Norwegian Breakaway, the Norwegian Getaway is scheduled to debut in January 2014 and sail year-round to the Eastern Caribbean out of Miami.
Norwegian executives also announced that Norwegian Getaway will feature Broadway's Burn the Floor, a ballroom dancing show that is on Norwegian Breakaway, too.
Legally Blonde is just the latest Broadway show to debut on a cruise ship. The new Norwegian Breakaway features Rock of Ages in its main theater, and Royal Caribbean has added Hairspray and Chicago: The Musical to its newest ships.
Legally Blonde opened on Broadway at the Palace Theater on April 29, 2007 and closed in 2008 after playing 595 performances. The show also played on London's West End at the Savoy Theatre and currently is touring in Australia.
Like the Norwegian Breakaway, the Norwegian Getaway was named by a USA TODAY reader in 2011 in a contest held here at USA TODAY's sub-site devoted to cruising, the Cruise Log.
