There is now video footage of the minor collision between two Holland America Line cruise ships at the Canada Place cruise ship terminal in downtown Vancouver.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning, when the Oosterdam was making a maneuver to dock at the cruise ship terminal. In the process, it allided with the already-docked Nieuw Amsterdam, while docking stern to stern.
Video posted onto YouTube, captured by someone onboard the Oosterdam, shows the vessel making slow contact with the Nieuw Amsterdam. The scraping produced loud screeches and bangs.
Six exterior staterooms on the rear of the Nieuw Amsterdam were damaged in the process. The Oosterdam also received some minor exterior damage, but no staterooms were affected.
According to the cruise line, no injuries were recorded and disembarkation on both ships went ahead after the incident. Repairs to the Nieuw Amsterdam’s damaged staterooms began almost immediately, and guests booked in the affected suites on the upcoming voyage were re-accommodated in other staterooms.
Both vessels left port late Saturday afternoon as scheduled; the Nieuw Amsterdam began its next seven-day, round-trip Alaska cruise, while the Oosterdam sailed overnight to Seattle for the starting point of its next seven-day roundtrip Alaska cruise.
The Nieuw Amsterdam has a length of 258 metres, gross tonnage of 86,700 GT, and a capacity for 2,106 passengers and 929 crew.
As for the Oosterdam, it has a length of 290 metres, gross tonnage of 82,000 GT, and a capacity for 1,848 passengers and 812 crew.
