Very impressive! He is going to address the 900 of us at the beginning of our National Conference aboard Regal Princess Nov 9. I'm looking forward to it. -

Yes, with these promotions, the cruise line fronts the money for the gratuities. Celebrity offers it regularly with their 1,2,3 promotion where you can choose between free gratuities, or a classic beverage package, or shipboard credit. Occasionally others do. Our company periodically will run one of these, offering prepaid gratuities.

We did Southern France from Arle to Chalon-sur-Soane and then a train to Paris for 2 days. My wife prefers red wine so we visited the Rhone wine country. We sailed on Uniworld and loved it. I have put people on AMA Waterways, Viking, and Avalon and no one has been disappointed. I would rank them as AMA Waterways and Uniworld being premier and Viking and Avalon more mass market. The newcomer is A-Rosa, which was formerly catering only to the German market with buffet dining only, but hired a NY marketing agency and is catering to North Americans now on some itineraries. They all range from about 140 passengers up to about 200 on some of the new Viking longships. The vessels they use in Myanmar, Vietnam/Cambodia, and south Africa are much smaller, from 28-58 passengers. Look at the detailed itineraries. Not every line does identical itineraries on the Paris to Normandy itinerary. The 2014 season is about sold out, unless you are interested in the Christmas Markets in Germany or the Danube. This is the time to book 2015 to have the best cabin selections and prices.

Anyone ever had a cruise with stops in Viet Nam
JohnG replied to jacketwatch's topic in Let's Talk Cruise!
I didn't need one the last time I was there.....May 1969-May 1970! -
It is a shame, as I have always enjoyed Roatan, and they really need the money the cruise passengers spend. I don't see it as any more dangerous than big US cities. Glad to see they are starting to stop again in Mazatlan. Always enjoyed it too

Cruise lines defend treatment of staff. Your thoughts?
JohnG replied to Jason's topic in Let's Talk Cruise!
Our Navy people typically work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week while deployed on ships. The pay is better but having worked those long hours myself, I appreciate the cruse ship staff efforts. It was a treat when, after three straight months at sea, we had a BBQ on deck and offered a single can of beer. At least the cruise ship staff has crew bars and the get ashore occasionally. -
Our first visit to Columbia was to Cartagena in Dec 2012 on our MSC Poesia anniversary cruise. We really enjoyed it. Cartagena is old and new. The fort, the old city, emerald factories, and the new, Miami-like, section. We hired a taxi with several other couples and he took us on a narrated tour with stops in the old city, and a tour of an Emerald factory. I really liked what I saw. The old quarter reminds me of Old San Juan in the architechture. I look forward to an itinerary that stops there again.

While some inflammatory consumer media reports place the blame for such illnesses squarely on the cruise lines, industry experts and CDC statistics indicate norovirus often is carried onboard by passengers and affects a tiny percentage of cruise travelers. The CDC says norovirus is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in the U.S., afflicting 19 million to 21 million cases each year. In 2013, the CDC confirmed seven such norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships, affecting 1,321 passengers. As reported in Travel Pulse, June 30, 2014 Only .0066% of all the cases last year occurred on Cruise ships.

New Cruise Review - 3-Night Disney Magic to Castaway Cays
JohnG replied to Jan115's topic in Let's Talk Cruise!
The Disney ships all have an adult only pool, adult only restaurant and lounges in the evening, People have asked me why would adults go on Disney. To enjoy the Disney entertainment and customer service, as well as having those adult-only areas if that's what adults are looking for. I enjoy the Disney ships and have been on the older ones and one new one, the Disney Dream. Excellent time on each. Glad you had a chance to check out Disney, too, Jan, and share your experience with us. -
They didn't remodel the Dream. It was the first ship of a new ship design, that now includes the Carnival Dream, Magic, and Breeze. Each incorporated the cove balconies. I'm not sure who gave that seminar Bill attended, but they didn't know the straight story about Carnival and the new ships. The cabins are the same size as regular balconies, 185 sq ft, but the cove balcony is larger - 45 sq ft versus a regular balcony at 35 sq ft. Instead of a clear balcony and railing, they just cut an oval opening in steel hull and that is the view from the cove balcony. Disney has some similar balconies with solid balconies, as do some Cunard ships.

Ocho Rios Upgrading Cruise Facilities. Who's cruised to Jamaica?
JohnG replied to Jason's topic in Let's Talk Cruise!
In July I toured all of Negril, Whitehouse, Ocho Rios, and Montego Bay over a week's time, doing an agent familiarization trip of every Sandals, Beaches, and Grand Pineapple resort on the island. I never felt threatened. My wife and I stayed at Sandals Grande Ocho Rios in February. We have done excursions there, too. One year several years ago I took sick and had to visit the hospital in St Mary's Parish (Ocho Rios) at night. I never had a problem. We haven't stopped on a cruise ship there in a while, but when we did, we just "no" and kept moving. -
