Ellen, You can smoke in your own stateroom--we would suggest a verandah. Smoking is prohibitive in all dining rooms and showrooms. You can smoke in designated areas in most bars and the casino and outdoors one side of the ship is for smoking.

Congratulations on your upcoming 30th anniversary and your first cruise. Lisa, as usual, gave you some very good answers. We have been on five HAL cruises, with number six booked. In our opinion there is no better way to celebrate an anniversary then being on the ocean on a romantic cruise! If you have specific questions about the ship or your eastern Caribbean itinerary just ask away. There are many friendly folks here like Lisa that will be more than happy to answer your questions. We have never been diverted, however, once on an eastern Caribbean cruise there was a hurricane in the gulf. When we arrived in St Thomas it looked like a cruise ship traffic jam, as the ships on the western itineraries diverted to eastern. Also, one time we missed Half Moon Cay because of rough seas and received a $100 credit.

It seems more and more cruise lines are going to the auto tipping charged to your sign and sail card in lieu of handing out tips at the end of the cruise. What do you think? We auto tipped on our last cruise for the first time. It is very convenient, however, we wondered how the money was being distributed? Our next cruise on the Zaandam has auto tipping at $10 per day per person. Also, HAL is adding 15% tips to all drinks just like the rest of the cruise lines. Always in the past we would hand out tips to the bartenders and servers who gave us the best service on our last night aboard ship. We are happy for this change, but not so thrilled about the auto tipping. We always enjoyed handing out the tip envelopes to our waiter, assistant waiter, and cabin steward.

Our TA called us yesterday and informed us HAL has reduced our fare by a total of $1,000 for our New years cruise!
