  1. Like the old song says: "It only hurts for a little while." Now that your final payment is out of the way it is all down hill now. We just made our final payment a week or so ago for our December cruise, so I can share your feelings.
  2. Along the same idea, Keith. My camcorder can be charged with 220V, so I have a Europen plug adapter and use the 220 outlet in most cabins which normally goes unused by Americans. I also bought a new digital camera, a very tiny Minolta with a very small but powerful battery. Then I bought two extra batteries which are about the size of a stick of chewing gum. More than enough power for hundreds of pics, so I leave my charger at home.
  3. Of course we all know duct tape is a must for a cruise, as well as a Swiss Army knife and a travel clock, but this time I took some things we had never taken before. The first was a rubber shower floor mat, will make you feel more secure on that slick floor. Second, I took a very small LCD night light which I kept plugged into the outlet at the desk. Was just a dull glow, but enough light to find your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Third, for the first time we took a very small can of powerful air freshener. In a small shipboard bathroom it is a MUST. This time we also took a dual time zone travel clock so we always knew what time it was back home. Got it as a gift for my birthday and I really like it. It is made by Sharper Image. For our next cruise in December I am going to buy some TSA locks for our luggage. Hate those cable ties!
  4. Either a gown or cocktail dress will do the trick!! Don't stress over Formal Nights, after a few cruises you will look forward to them. I know we do.
  5. Toto, The review is posted. I'm sure you will enjoy your Spring cruise. I talked with the Captain about that cruise at lunch one day. Would love to do it ourselves! Any questions not answered in the review, drop me a note at: edwynn@GBRonline.com and I will try and help.
  6. All of our recent cruises have been booked online with no problems and great savings. After 42 cruises we know what we want and really don't need a TA's "hand-holding" through the process. If we were doing something really complicated, I'd probably go back to a TA. There is even a site where you can post your cruise details and have various agencies compete through a bid process and you pick the one you want. Used it on our recent Legend of the Seas cruise and it worked great.
  7. The promised review has been posted.
  8. You might want to try Priceline. Any hotel downtown will be a very short cab ride to the ship. We have gotten very good prices on upscale hotels through Priceline on past cruises out of Tampa.
  9. Just go back into Las Vegas at 3 PM yesterday after a seven day cruise aboard the Legend of the Seas out of San Diego. Excellent cruise! Review about 1/2 complete, will most likely post it tonight.
  10. Very interesting Jason. We have a group going on the Diamond Princess in late January 2005 and all info says Long Beach, now it sounds like it may well be San Pedro. No big deal for us as the two ports are about 3 mile apart, but I will be following this as I do not want to be taking the bunch to the wrong port!! With Carnival the new owner of Princess, I don't know if they will really let Princess desert their brand new terminal and covered parking garage in Long Beach. I guess we will see as time goes by.
  11. Thanks for all the good wishes! Sure glad we are cruising out of San Diego and not trying to get a ship out of Florida!! I'm all packed. Roe's stuff is stacked here and there and I'm sure she will be packing tonight, as usual. Tomorrow morning, as early as I can get Roe moving, we will be driving to San Diego and the Legend of the Seas. Just hope the 225,000 folks in Vegas this weekend wait at least until Monday before heading back to Southern California! Otherwise it will look like to roads out of Florida yesterday. Will post our usual review upon our return! Bye,
  12. Karen, There is no way to "arrange" dining with the Captain. Normally, the Social Hostess makes the decisions as to who will dine with him. We have dined with several of them over the years, how we were selected is tough to say. I do know that it has nothing to do with cabin type. My recommendation would be to be very personable with crew members such as the Cruise Director and particularly the Social Hostess and/or Captain's Club Rep. But, this is NOT something you ask for, it just happens either verbally and/or by invitation delivered to your stateroom. On one cruise aboard the Majesty of the Seas our entire table was invited to dine with the Captain because he liked "fun" people and our table seemed to be having a heck of a lot of fun even though we had never met before the cruise. Good luck,
  13. Good Luck to all you Floridians (even if you have a little trouble with Chad). Don't try to be a hero, get out of harms way. Mother Nature is not fooling around! Stuff can be replaced or repaired but you do not have nine lives! Saw the damage Andrew did to South Florida and all of you are in my thoughts and prayers!
  14. How about the "Love Boat" theme song???
  15. Wow, sure glad we are sailing out of San Diego this Sunday instead of our usual Lauderdale or Miami! Think about all those cruisers getting ready to depart for FL in the next couple of days! What a turmoil they must be in! Florida sure does not need this new storm.
  16. Just had diner Saturday night with a couple we have cruised with who really used their insurance. In January they were on the Radience of the Seas and while ashore he had a heart attack. They got him back to the ship and he was hospitialized at the next stop Grand Cayman for 8 days and then returned to the states for more hospitalization. Insurance paid for everything and is still paying for followup exams etc. and picking us the slack for whatever their ragular hospital insurance does not couple. They said "without this insurance, we would be bankrupt." Convinced me to start using insurance. The company they used was Travel Guard.
  17. On a group cruise a few years ago we had a wedding. Everyone in the group could board early and the wedding was in full Scottish Regalia including a piper. Took place prior to ship's departure. Yes, a group booking will earn free berths either at the rate of every 16th berth is free or if you really negoiate every 11th. Remember we are talking berths here not cabins. Any good travel agent can put this kind of thing together. We had over 400 people on the cruise I mentioned above. I am putting together a fund raiser for our church and negotiate a free berth after 10 berths booked. NO, I am not a travel agent. Just a cruise nut. Hope this helps.
  18. I could not agree with jbond more. You do want your own snorkel tube and probably your own mask, the rest of the stuff will not be in contact with your face. We bought masks and snorkels first, the added fins, then later inflatable vests, so now we have all our own stuff, but like jbond said we leave most everything at home, but the masks and snorkels.
  19. We did a different type of "back to back" a few years ago. Sailed a week on NCL Sky, disembarked, walked down the pier in Ft. Lauderdale and boarded the CCL Paradise for a second week of cruising. We did it basically for the reason someone has already pointed out. Air to Florida from Las Vegas was the same for two weeks and for our normal one week cruise. BTW, we had a great time on both cruises.

  21. Just read a report that the crew of the Legend of the Seas managed to dump a bunch of luggage in the water while off-loading!! Some pieces were retrieved, soaked of course, other still rest in the deep! Now that a new way to lose luggage! May have to rename this ship The Luggage of the Seas! Going to be boarding her in about two weeks, hope they have their act togeter a little better by then. Once had a Tumi leather garment bag loaded onto a airport van following a cruise which terminated in San Juan by a folk lift. Cut through the bag and destroyed it and my tux as well. At least it was on the way home. Cruise line made good on everything, but almost chocked when the saw the price of the garment bag, which was on it's maiden voyage.

  23. You know the rush to disembark or board a tender at your ports of call?? Crew Member refer to them as "Geezer Jams". Shared with me by a former crew member (entertainer). Can't help think about it everytime I'm trying to get off a ship!
