  5. Carnival Cruise Lines' newest ship, the 130,000-ton Carnival Magic, was officially named in a shipboard ceremony in Venice, Italy, earlier today by godmother Lindsey Wilkerson, a former patient at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital who is now serves as an employee and an ambassador of the organization.Hosted by Senior Cruise Director John Heald, the naming ceremony began with a preview of the line's newest production show, "Destination Unknown." The spectacular magic revue served to bring Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill to the stage as he arrived via helicopter, one of the many illusions that are featured within the new show. Then, with the assistance of Carnival Magic Captain Giovanni Cutugno, Wilkerson offered the ship and the crew her best wishes and pushed a custom-designed button that rested on a podium resembling the line's iconic winged funnel thus releasing a bottle of champagne across the vessel's bow. During the ceremony, Carnival presented St. Jude with a $50,000 donation, continuing the line's ongoing partnership of the organization, one of the world's premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic diseases. 8. Royal Caribbean International's Voyager of the Seas today became the first ship to call at Historic Falmouth port. Situated between the popular cruise ports of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, Historic Falmouth is the first-ever thematic cruise port and is also a convenient gateway for guests to embark on more than 60 exhilarating land experiences along the north coast of Jamaica. Additionally, restoration throughout the town of Falmouth offer guests a wide selection of cultural and historic experiences. "We are delighted to see Voyager of the Seas make the first-ever ship call at Historic Falmouth," said Craig Milan, senior vice president of Land Operations, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. "By partnering with the Port Authority of Jamaica, we are working to deliver our shared vision of Falmouth's rebirth. Together, we are bringing the town's historic sites to life and integrating the culture and authenticity of this destination into a superior guest experience." The grand opening celebrations of Historic Falmouth port will take place on March 22, 2011 when Oasis of the Seas makes her maiden call into the port. Other Royal Caribbean ships that will be calling at Historic Falmouth include Freedom of the Seas on Feb. 23; Navigator of the Seas on Feb. 24; and Allure of the Seas debuting on March 30. Guests can experience a diverse variety of shore excursions at an additional cost while at Historic Falmouth, including: • Good Hope Great House: located fifteen minutes from Falmouth, guests can choose from the new horse & carriage ride, river-tubing, ATV exploring, among others, on this former 18th century Jamaican plantation. • Dolphin Cove & Dunn's River Falls: adventure seekers can climb Dunn's River Falls; zip-line through the lush rainforest canopy or wind down the mountainside on a Jamaican bobsled at Mystic Mountain; or swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Cove. • Appleton Estate: after a scenic drive through the Cockpit Country and Bamboo Avenue, guests can indulge in one of Falmouth's old-world delicacies by learning to make rum and sampling different aged rums. • Rafting on Martha Brae: located five minutes from Falmouth, guests can enjoy a tranquil ride on a 30-foot bamboo raft. "Falmouth has an important place in the cultural history of Jamaica. It is especially rewarding for us to use that history as an entree for a new generation of guests," said Hon Mike Henry, Jamaica's Minister of Transport and Works, who has portfolio responsibility for cruise shipping. "Our sights have always been set on being the preeminent cruise destination, and with the best-in-class berthing facilities at the Historic Falmouth port, we'll now easily welcome the world's largest ships." The revitalization of Historic Falmouth is a multi-phased development project with the first phase near completion offering a two-berth pier, retail and restaurant services as well as a transportation center. Subsequent phases will include onsite attractions and experiences, hotel and residential developments, as well as additional retail and restaurant options. The town also has many prominent houses, shops and public buildings built in the 18th and 19th centuries that are still standing, but are in need of refurbishment. The restoration and preservation of several historic buildings in Falmouth is currently underway. Falmouth was founded in 1790 from land owned by Edward Barrett. His granddaughter Elizabeth Barrett Browning would later be celebrated as one of the greatest poets in the English language. At that time Jamaica was the world's leading sugar producer, and this was most evident in Falmouth with more than 80 sugar estates nearby. The town was meticulously mapped out in the Colonial tradition, with streets named after British royalty and heroes—King Street, Queen Street, Rodney Street (after 18th century naval leader Admiral Lord George Rodney) and Wellington Street (after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington). The remarkable density of historic Georgian architectural buildings, which residents have lived in and maintained, is reflective of the town's rich heritage. Its public amenities included the first piped water supply system in the Western Hemisphere, established in 1799. The town prospered throughout the first half of the 19th century and was the birthplace of the abolition slavery movement. Falmouth was the site of many revolts, and many of the buildings in the town served as safe houses for those who had escaped. In fact, a prominent Falmouth reverend, William Knibb, whose house still stands in the town, was granted Jamaica's highest civil honor, the Order of Merit, in 1988, 150 years after the abolition of slavery.
  9. New year, new look. That's what's in store for Celebrity Summit in January 2012, when the cruise ship becomes the third in Celebrity Cruises' Millennium Class quartet to complete a significant "Solsticizing," the term the line coined for its initiative to complement its Millennium Class ships' style and design with some of the most popular attributes found on its widely heralded Solstice Class ships. Among the multiple highlights: the coveted AquaClass, Celebrity's soothing, spa-inspired veranda-category accommodations, paired with the chic, Mediterranean-themed specialty restaurant, "Blu," offered exclusively for AquaClass guests; the virtually indescribable "Qsine" specialty restaurant, and the hip "Celebrity iLounge." "Based on the phenomenal response we've had from guests who have sailed on the 'Solsticized' Celebrity Constellation , we're eager to introduce the same new features – ranging from the 'Cellarmasters' wine bar to our signature 'icy' Martini Bar to our cool Cafe al Bacio and Gelateria – and even more on Celebrity Summit," said Celebrity's President & CEO Dan Hanrahan. "We recognize that consumers' vacation time is precious, which inspires us to do everything we can to make their vacation with Celebrity Cruises something that is truly different and better than anything they've experienced before." A Celebrity exclusive – "Qsine," the novel restaurant introduced on Celebrity Eclipse last year, and set to debut on Celebrity Infinity following the ship's revitalization in December 2011 – will be presented on Celebrity Summit, too. The first restaurant at sea to present a menu and wine list on an iPad™, Qsine has been described in press reviews as "the latest and most innovative restaurant," "cutting-edge," "appealingly quirky," "menu-tainment," "entertainment and dining rolled into one," "like a rollercoaster with a tablecloth" and simply, "defying description." Qsine features playful, delectable options including a vertical selection of savory tapas and mezze served individually in custom-made frames, a trio of chilled soups delivered shot-style, and spring rolls served in springs. All are described in detail on the iPad-housed menu and wine list, which offers a full scan of wine labels, an interactive cocktail menu, and the ability for guests to enter tasting notes and e-mail their favorite wine selections. Joining AquaClass, Blu and Qsine in the "Solsticizing" of Celebrity Summit will be: • the hip Celebrity iLounge, which debuted on Celebrity Eclipse and made Celebrity Cruises the industry's first Authorized Apple Reseller, and where guests can participate in Celebrity's "iLearn" enrichment series • a "cool" new ice-topped Martini Bar and Crush • the vibrant creperie, Bistro on Five • the inviting Cafe al Bacio and Gelateria • Cellarmasters wine bar, complete with the "Enomatic" state-of-the-art wine serving system – an industry-first when it debuted on Celebrity Solstice – allowing guests to select wines by the glass, at the touch of a button • entirely new verandas added to the ship's spacious, luxurious Celebrity Suites • even more sumptuous suites, courtesy of all new furniture, flat-screen TVs, upholstery, bedding and carpeting – and, as offered with every suite with Celebrity Cruises, 24/7 butler service • restyled staterooms, with entirely new carpeting, flat-screen TVs, upholstery and bedding • new color schemes, carpeting and upholstery reflective of the Solstice Class' stylish, modern design in every public venue • additional new oceanview and inside staterooms • an expanded collection of original, contemporary art As previously announced, sister ship Celebrity Infinity will emerge from a scheduled drydock period December 3, 2011, with all the Solstice-inspired enhancements planned for Celebrity Summit.
  10. After completing repairs in a San Francisco dry dock facility and successfully undergoing sea trials, the 3,006-passenger Carnival Splendor is now en route to its homeport of Long Beach, Calif., where it will resume its year-round schedule of seven-day Mexican Riviera cruises Feb. 20, 2011. On this route, the ship departs the Long Beach Cruise Terminal every Sunday on week-long cruises to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas, on Mexico's Pacific Coast. Carnival Splendor suffered significant damage from a fire in the engine room last November that caused a power outage and left the ship adrift off the coast of Mexico. The cruise ship had to be towed to San Diego and then San Francisco where repairs were completed. With the Carnival Splendor's resumption of service, combined with the Carnival Paradise's year-round three- and four-day Baja voyages, Carnival Cruise Lines will return to its normal passenger volume from Long Beach, carrying nearly 400,000 passengers a year. "Carnival Cruise Lines continues to be the number one West Coast operator with two ships based in Long Beach year-round, as well as a ship operating seasonal itineraries from San Diego and Los Angeles. We have more year-round capacity dedicated to the West Coast than any other cruise line and we are committed to maintaining our leadership position in this important market," said Gerry Cahill, Carnival's president and CEO. Cahill noted that the Carnival Splendor has been thoroughly inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard and Lloyd's Registry, a ship classification society, which monitored the repair process during dry docks in San Diego and San Francisco. "We're obviously very pleased that the Carnival Splendor is returning to service and we're looking forward to welcoming our guests aboard this fantastic ship," Cahill said. "We would also like to thank our guests for their patience over the past few weeks, as well as our travel agent partners, the ports of San Diego and San Francisco and all of the government agencies, repair contractors and countless others who have provided invaluable assistance and support."
  11. MaryLou and Jim, have a wonderful cruise.
  12. Norwegian Cruise Line announced this week that it has completed the first phase of enhancements at Great Stirrup Cay, the line's 250-acre private island in the Bahamas. On Thursday, February 3, the company opened the new marina and dining facility on the island, representing a significant milestone in the more than $20 million enhancement project currently underway. Norwegian Sky's 2,000 guests were the first to experience the opening of the marina basin with four docks for the island's tenders and the new 8,500 square foot dining facility, complete with two bars and four picnic pavilions. "Both the new marina and the dining facility greatly enhance the guest experience on Great Stirrup Cay which is our second busiest port of call this year," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line's president and CEO. "By moving the tenders' arrival to the marina and away from the beach, we have now opened up a great expanse of beachfront for our guests to enjoy and relax. We've also built a new large dining facility that is similar to the action station restaurants we have on board our Freestyle Cruising ships." The marina is approximately 12 feet deep at low water and is home to the island's four tenders. It took more than eight months to excavate the basin and the entrance channel. The dining facility includes a central pizza making station, two grills, hot and cold food stations, as well as fresh fruits and breads. There are two full bars on either side of the facility for added convenience. The four pavilions, each more than 1800 square feet, offer picnic tables with a total seating capacity for more than 500 guests. Enhancements to Great Stirrup Cay have been underway since January of 2010 and will continue through the end of this year. Several new island activities have been added since the project began including more than 16 wave runners, kayak rentals and an eco-adventure boat tour around the island. These are in addition to the existing snorkeling; floats; inflatable hippo slide; and parasailing. The second phase of enhancements includes an arrival/departure pavilion, additional bar facilities; several comfort stations; a band stand; cruise program activity area; private beachfront cabanas; a kid's play area; straw market; and beach volleyball courts. The beachfront will continue to be expanded on the island's west end. Norwegian has owned the island since 1977 when it became the first cruise line to offer an uninhabited tropical island experience exclusively for its guests. Great Stirrup Cay offers magnificent white sand beaches, majestic palms and calm, pristine waters where an abundance of colorful marine life inhabits the surrounding coral reefs. Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Pearl regularly call on Great Stirrup Cay throughout the year.
  13. Half Moon Cay – the crescent-shaped private Bahamian island that is one of Carnival Cruise Lines’ most popular ports of call – now features a truly unique watering hole called Captain Morgan on the Rocks. Inspired by the adventures of real-life privateer Captain Henry Morgan, the nautical-themed bar resembles a 101-foot-long twin decked, three-masted schooner that appears to be “washed up” on the island’s sand-swept beach. With a capacity of 326, the two-level Captain Morgan on the Rocks features engaging maritime and historic references, including rum casks for seats, cannon barrels for bar stools and palm leaf-styled ceiling fans. The mid-deck features another bar that is surrounded by cannons that release mists of water to keep guests cool in the Bahamian sun. The crafted wooden walls, decks, surfaces and fittings also include logos, messaging and images that are “burnt” into the wood to tell the story of the famous captain, who sailed Bahamian waters 350 years ago. Outdoor seating is available on two awning-covered, themed decks, with the open upper deck offering sweeping vistas of Half Moon Cay’s turquoise waters, a beautiful white sand beach, and an unspoiled migratory bird sanctuary. Naturally, the bar features different varieties of Captain Morgan rum products as well as a wide selection of premium drinks from across the Diageo portfolio. Located less than 100 miles from Nassau, Half Moon Cay is a 2,400-acre private island offering the quintessential Caribbean experience, with a 700-acre lagoon, private cabanas, a children’s water park, and a wide variety of shore excursion opportunities. Half Moon Cay is currently featured on itineraries of six Carnival “Fun Ships” — Carnival Fascination from Jacksonville, Carnival Destiny, Carnival Glory, Carnival Valor and Carnival Liberty from Miami, and Carnival Legend from Tampa. The new facility is a joint project between Carnival Cruise Lines, Diageo and sister cruise company, Holland America Line.
  14. Mexican authorities have charged a 24-year old national with the murder of Monika Markiewicz. The 32-year old victim was a crew member aboard the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship, Allure of the Seas. Ms. Markiewicz did not report back to the ship before it departed Cozumel on February 4. Her body was discovered the next day in the water off of a remote beach in Cozumel. Royal Caribbean International has been informed that law enforcement in Cozumel has identified and charged a local resident and bartender, 24-year old Nelson Perez Torres, with the murder. Reports indicate that Torres and Ms. Markiewicz were casually acquainted for several months and he followed her for a period of time before killing her along the roadway on her way back to the ship. Royal Caribbean's Global Security Department fully supported and assisted Mexican officials in their investigation of this isolated and uncharacteristic crime for Cozumel. "We thank the Mexican authorities for their commitment to quickly solving the murder of our crew member, Monika Markiewicz. Her untimely death is tragic and has saddened all of us at Royal Caribbean. We have informed Monika's family in Poland of today's news update and we will continue to be in contact with them and to support them during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends," said Adam Goldstein, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International.

  16. Disney Cruise Line celebrated the keel laying of the Disney Fantasy at the Meyer Werft shipyard last Friday. This is the second of two newly-designed ships that take the family cruise experience to all new heights. Sister ship to the Disney Fantasy, Disney Dream, entered service on Jan. 26, 2011. The keel laying ceremony is a significant milestone in the ship building process when the first block, or section of the ship, is lowered into the building dock and a coin is placed under the keel for good fortune. 17. The most significant transformation ever of a Princess Cruises ship will occur this spring aboard Grand Princess. During a 24-day makeover the ship, which was the prototype for the line's "Grand Class" vessels, will undergo a renovation to receive many of Princess' trademark features introduced since the ship's 1998 debut including the signature Piazza atrium. Several new features will be also be added including a unique tea lounge and library called "Leaves"; and "Alfredo's," a full-service pizzeria showcasing this renowned Princess dish. A brand new nightclub called One5, inspired by its deck location, will be created on the top deck of the ship, replacing its iconic Skywalker Nightclub, which has given the ship its distinctive profile. Skywalkers will be removed from its 18th deck perch, with its replacement located on deck 15. This change will significantly improve the operational performance of the ship, including greater fuel efficiency. "This is the largest makeover we've ever undertaken for any of our ships," said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. "When Grand Princess was launched she was the most innovative ship at sea, and now we're adding some of the later innovations we introduced on subsequent ships." The changes will be made during a drydock from April 11 to May 4 at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas. Highlights of the dramatic makeover include: New Piazza atrium – The atrium space of Grand Princess will be completely rebuilt to include this signature Princess feature -- a multi-faceted social hub of the ship combining always-changing quick bites and light meals, beverages, entertainment, shopping and guest services. The Piazza will feature the International Cafe for pastries, grilled panini sandwiches, salads, fresh-baked cookies and a variety of coffee drinks. Passenger will also enjoy a new Vines wine bar offering a selection of more than 30 wines by the glass, plus a selection of tapas and sushi, and a wine shop where passengers can purchase their favorite bottle. Leaves Tea Lounge and Library – A fusion of tea lounge and library, the new Leaves offers a distinctive opportunity for passengers to custom-blend a variety of base teas with herbs, fruits and spices to create a personalized tea blend. Created in partnership with Mighty Leaf Tea Company, one of the world's premier maker of artisan teas, Leaves will give passengers an impressive choice of up to 500 different tea blends to suit their palates. A trained tea sommelier will assist passengers in blending a personalized tea creation, which they can enjoy in the midst of the library and a good book. Alfredo's Pizzeria – Known for serving the best pizza at sea, Princess will introduce Alfredo's, a new sit-down pizzeria with an enticing menu of freshly prepared individual-size pizzas. Named for the line's master executive chef, Alfredo Marzi, the pizzeria will feature an open kitchen where passengers can watch chefs create the pizzas they'll enjoy with a glass of wine or other beverage. One5 Lounge – The new One5 lounge will replace Skywalkers as the place to be for nighttime dancing and relaxing. The new lounge on deck 15 (hence its name) takes its inspiration from the chicest urban nightclubs, and will offer a cool vibe, contemporary seating and lighting, and a dramatic back-lit bar. Crown Grill – A classic steakhouse with rich wood surroundings, this specialty restaurant features an open, theater-style kitchen where chefs custom-prepare premium aged beef and fresh seafood items, including live lobsters. Also part of the renovation will be 10 new suites; remodeled casino, boutiques and art gallery; enhancements to the Horizon Court, Lotus Spa, and wedding chapel; and the addition of Crooner's Martini Lounge. The newly renovated Grand Princess will debut on May 5 in Ft. Lauderdale where the ship will depart on a transatlantic crossing for her summer and fall homeport of Southampton, from which she will cruise a variety of European itineraries.

  19. Danish-born Inger Olsen made history on 1 December 2010 by becoming Cunard Line's first female Captain in its 171-year history of sailing luxury cruise vacations. Yesterday, she continued her historic maiden sailings as Captain of Queen Victoria, as she brought the ship back to the Port of Los Angeles. Captain Olsen and Queen Victoria are coming off the heels of the momentous Cunard Royal Rendezvous in New York City on 13 January, where all three of Cunard's Queens met for a spectacular fireworks display in front of the Statue of Liberty before departing on their respective voyages. Olsen joined Queen Victoria just prior to the commencement of the ship's debut Americas season, departing from New York and sailing to Los Angeles. During this first 17-day voyage, the ship called on Ft. Lauderdale and Bonaire, traversed the Panama Canal, and visited three ports in Mexico – Huatulco, Acapulco and Manzanillo – before arriving into Los Angeles yesterday. Queen Victoria's Americas season continues until 18 March, and features additional transits through the Panama Canal, four total calls to Los Angeles, two roundtrip voyages from Los Angeles to Hawaii, and one Getaway voyage to Mexico. Forty-three-year-old Captain Olsen was raised in the Faroe Islands, which accounts for her maritime abilities, and she joined Cunard in 1997 as First Officer on board Caronia. In 2001 she transferred to sister-brand Seabourn. She sailed on Seabourn Sun and Seabourn Spirit before being promoted to the rank of Staff Captain on Seabourn Pride in 2003. Following some years with other companies within the Carnival Corporation family, Captain Olsen returned to Cunard in August this year as Deputy Captain of Queen Victoria. When not at the helm of the majestic Cunard ocean liner, Captain Olsen lives in Denmark.
