MIAMI - March 23, 2012 - Norwegian Cruise Line stars in a new dating reality series, "Love for Sail," which premieres on Lifetime Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at 10 pm ET/PT. In each episode of "Love for Sail," four adventurous women will board a spectacular Norwegian Cruise Line ship and set sail to exotic locations surrounded by a group of equally-eager single men ready to embark on what they hope to be the voyage of their lives. The show is being produced by Studio Lambert ("Undercover Boss"). With the help of series’ Cruise Directors Bucko and Carmen, the women meet their suitors at an opening mixer where the matchmaking begins. Throughout the cruise, the singles participate in a variety of romantic dates on board, mixer parties and adventurous excursions in beautiful ports of call such as Ocho Rios, Jamaica and Nassau, Bahamas. Some will make love connections, but for others, it’s not always smooth sailing. Either way, viewers will enjoy the fun and drama behind the competitive courtship among the women and men, all of who are hoping to hook-in a mate on this once in a lifetime journey. "We are thrilled to work with Lifetime and our friends at Studio Lambert on a unique series that showcases the many aspects of cruising from lavish suites and incredible dining options to innovative on board activities and exciting shore excursions," said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. "There is such romance in being at sea; this show will do a great job of showcasing that and sharing the stories of these guests who may find the love of their life aboard." "Love for Sail" features three of Norwegian’s Freestyle Cruising ships. Norwegian Epic, the line’s newest and most innovative ship to date, hosted the women in The Haven by Norwegian, the line’s exclusive suite complex on three private decks at the top of the ship. Viewers will catch an intimate glimpse of Posh, The Haven’s luxurious beach club and The Haven Courtyard. Mandara Spa, the largest spa at sea; Bliss Ultra Lounge, Epic’s hot nightclub; and Spice H20, the ship’s adult-only pool area, will also be featured as the women search for love at sea. The women sailed on Norwegian Epic’s cruise to the Eastern Caribbean, calling on St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; Phillipsburg, St. Maarten and Nassau, Bahamas from Miami, Florida. Norwegian Pearl also has a starring role in "Love for Sail," with the women staying in The Haven by Norwegian in the largest suite at sea – the luxurious 5,000 square foot, three-bedroom Garden Villa, complete with a private living and dining room, sundeck and hot tub. Various aspects of the ship will be highlighted including the Great Outdoors bar; La Cucina, the ship’s Italian restaurant; the pool deck; Maltings Beer & Whiskey Bar; Summer Palace and Bliss Ultra Lounge, among others. Love was in the air as Norwegian Pearl sailed to the Western Caribbean from Miami, Florida, visiting Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Cozumel, Mexico. Norwegian Star also makes a cameo appearance. Four women board the ship in Los Angeles, California on a Mexican Riviera cruise that stops in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. About Norwegian Cruise Line Norwegian Cruise Line is the innovator in cruise travel with a 45-year history of breaking the boundaries of traditional cruising, most notably with the introduction of Freestyle Cruising which has revolutionized the industry by allowing guests more freedom and flexibility. Today, Norwegian invites consumers to "Cruise Like a Norwegian" on one of its 11 purpose-built Freestyle Cruising ships, providing guests the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed cruise vacation on some of the newest and most contemporary ships at sea. The Company has two 4,000-passenger vessels, Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway, on order for delivery in April 2013 and April 2014. Will a fuel surcharge go into effect this summer? That question pops up from readers occasionally, but more frequently of late, with oil prices back over the $100 mark. The answer? I don't know. What I can tell you is there is not one cruise-line executive who wants to pull that trigger. If you look at the fine print on your contract to cruise, you will see that cruise lines have the right to add a surcharge when the barrel price reaches $65 to $75. We're long past that stage and major cruise lines have been ignoring it for some time. While cruise prices are holding in a lot of areas, you've probably noticed there has been some weakness in selected markets, and we are seeing many enticements in the form of quickie sales, upgrades, free tours, onboard credits and reduced airfares. What it tells me - keep in mind it's a moving target and changes from week to week - is that with this weakness, a fuel surcharge is currently not on the cruise-line radar. That doesn't mean it won't happen, but I think it would take a significant jump before it's added to your ticket. Meanwhile, cruise lines are taking positive steps in Europe, announcing new destinations and committing to the 2012 capacity for 2013 It appears that most lines are upping their offerings for Norway and Iceland cruises, along with cruises around the British Isles. The Brits have taken to cruising in a big way, with double-digit growth over the last few years. Most of it has come through the influx of major lines finding British home ports in Harwich, Southampton and Dover. Princess and Celebrity are two that are already out with their European schedules for next summer. Princess will be launching its new ship, Royal Princess, next year, and it will take over the 12-day Grand Mediterranean route. Caribbean Princess will be expanding its 12-day British Isles cruises with more departures, while the smaller Ocean Princess will debut a 14-day Iceland and Norway itinerary, along with more eight-day British Isles sailings. New ports for Princess include: Toulon, France (for Provence); Bordeaux (Le Verdon), France; Heraklion, Greece (on the island of Crete); Tra-pani, Italy (on Sicily); Milford Haven, Wales; Kirkeness, Norway; Klaksvik, Faroe Islands and Skjolden, Norway. Celebrity has some Europe 2013 cruises on sale now, and more will be available at celebritycruises.com on March 27. Celebrity's Infinity is making its debut in Europe next year with 10-and 11-day itineraries sailing the British Isles, Norwegian fjords and Iceland, with departures from Harwich. Infinity will also be sailing wine cruises in September, with overnight stays in Paris/Normandy (Le Havre), France; Bilbao, Spain; and Bordeaux (Le Verdon), France. Maiden ports for Celebrity are Liverpool, Torshavn (Faroe Islands), Varna (Bulgaria), Sevastopol (Ukraine) and Kristiansand (Norway). I'll finish off this week with an item that goes under the heading of "thank goodness this didn't happen." Did you know that Hannibal Gaddafi (yes, the late dictator's son) was in the process of building a cruise ship - a big one that would have accommodated 3,500 passengers, with a massive aquarium tank filled with species of sharks to entertain the passengers. This ego-based cruise ship, complete with gilt-edged interiors (for obvious reasons) was cancelled in its early stages and put up for sale. Major European line MSC Cruises bought the ship, to be named the MSC Preziosa. With the sale, the shark tank and all that gilt-edged opulence is gone. GIGLIO, Italy (AP) — Search crews found five more bodies in the wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which struck a reef off an Italian island in January, officials said Thursday. The discovery raises to 30 the number of bodies found. Two people remain missing and are presumed dead. The latest bodies were all found in spaces between the hull and the seabed off the Tuscan island of Giglio, according to the Italian Civil Protection agency, which is coordinating search operations. Since the Jan. 13 capsizing, the Concordia has been lying on its side, half submerged in water near Giglio's port. No details were given about the victims. Earlier, Franco Gabrielli, the official coordinating the search and salvage efforts, told reporters on the island that bodies were spotted when divers were working to set up a robotic device to search otherwise inaccessible parts of the wreck. The bodies were seen "in the spaces between the hull and the seabed," Gabrielli said. He added that it would take several days of work for the bodies to be removed. All of the other bodies before Thursday had been found inside the ship, except for three found in the sea near the ship in the first hours after the Concordia capsized. The ship hit a rocky reef, took on water and turned over just outside the port of the tiny island of Giglio off Tuscany. Divers and searchers have been combing the half-submerged ship, from passenger cabins to elevators to the decks where many of the 4,200 passengers and crew gathered during the delayed and frantic evacuation. Many jumped into the sea when lifeboats were unable to be launched because of the ship's tilt. Even before the latest bodies were found, eight removed in recent weeks were awaiting official identification. Weeks in the water badly decomposed the remains, and forensic authorities have used DNA sampling to try to identify them. A crew member from India and several passengers, including an elderly U.S. couple and others from Italy and Germany, are among those listed as missing or unidentified. The Concordia capsized in a protected sea sanctuary, and salvage teams have been removing fuel since Feb. 12 in hopes of sparing the pristine waters from pollution. Costa Crociere SpA., the Italian cruise company, and Italian officials said fuel removal was expected to be completed by Friday evening. Occasional bad weather and choppy seas have at times forced suspension of both the search for bodies and the fuel removal. The operation to remove the wrecked Concordia itself could take as long as 12 months. Bids for the job are being evaluated. The Concordia's Italian captain is under house arrest near Naples. Capt. Francesco Schettino is under investigation for alleged manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship during the evacuation. Schettino has denied wrongdoing and claimed that the reef wasn't marked on charts. Investigators are probing allegations that Schettino deliberately came too close to the island. Costa Crociere officials have distanced themselves from Schettino. Click here to view the article

The Great American Steamboat Company announces Priscilla Presley as the godmother of the steamboat American Queen. Presley, who is synonymous with Graceland in the steamboat’s homeport of Memphis, will name her in a christening ceremony at the revitalized Beale Street Landing on April 27. Highlights of the festivities will include performances by local musicians, a bottle of champagne crashing against the stern and the sounds of the American Queen Calliope as she steams off up the Mississippi River. The Great American Steamboat Company has also entered into an exclusive partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises. This collaboration will present the first Elvis Cruise on the American Queen from Memphis to New Orleans this December, as well as signature Graceland experiences for guests. A daughter of an Air Force officer, Priscilla Presley attended high school in Germany, where she met her future husband, Elvis Presley. In 1979 she became co-executor of the Presley Estate growing it from a burgeoning entity into a phenomenally successful organization consisting of the famous Graceland Mansion, a worldwide licensing program, merchandising, music publishing, television and video projects . In addition to being a savvy businesswoman, producer and actress, Presley is an ambassador of the Dream Foundation, helping to fulfill the dreams of adults battling terminal illnesses. She became aware of the organization after helping to grant recipients’ wishes to visit Graceland. The organization is the only one of its kind working with adults as well as helping to create lasting memories for their family and friends. Priscilla has also joined Hollywood celebrities in an important fight against the overmedication of children. She is an advocate for Citizen’s Commission on Human Rights and a percentage of all purchases on PriscillaPresley.com are donated to support these two worthy charities. “It is quite a thrill for Memphis as steamboating returns once again with the arrival of the American Queen,” explains Presley. “I look forward to her guests visiting Graceland and experiencing true Southern hospitality, which is why this city holds such a special place in my heart.” “Priscilla Presley’s efforts leading Elvis Presley Enterprises exemplify both grace and dignity, two adjectives befitting the American Queen,” explains Great American Steamboat Company CEO Jeff Krida. “Both are stunning ambassadors to Memphis and we are humbled to bring our steamboat family and the Presley family together.” The Great American Steamboat Company shares a common passion with Presley, which is its homeport of Memphis. Earlier this month the company hosted a job fair at the Memphis Cook Convention Center hiring 300+ new employees to work onboard the American Queen or at its downtown headquarters. An annual economic impact of $89 million for the region is expected with the largest and most opulent steamboat ever built returning to the heartland’s iconic rivers. After a sunset christening, the American Queen will depart for her inaugural voyage up the Mississippi River to the Ohio River with stops in Henderson, Ky., Louisville, Ky., and Madison, Ind., before arriving in her disembarkation city of Cincinnati. In Louisville she will take part in the wonderful tradition of the Kentucky Derby Festival’s Great Steamboat Race with the Belle of Louisville and Belle of Cincinnati. The American Queen will offer an unrivaled All-American hospitality experience from its elegant staterooms to its palatial public spaces and celebrated Southern cuisine of famed Chef Regina Charboneau, the line’s Culinary Director. A variety of voyage lengths, ranging from three nights to ten nights, and fares beginning at $995 per guest. Pre- or post-cruise luxury hotel stay, all bottled water and soft drinks, wine and beer at diner and complimentary shore adventures are included in each port of call.

Opening the books on its 2013 Mediterranean season on March 15, sales for the new Royal Princess reached an all-time record for the most bookings of any ship’s maiden season voyages. “We’re thrilled to see such enthusiasm for our new Royal Princess,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president of sales, marketing and customer service. “The volume of bookings we received on Thursday is a testament to the huge support of the travel agent community, our loyal past passengers, and those first-time Princess cruisers excited to experience Royal Princess.” The ship’s 12-day Grand Mediterranean cruises between Barcelona and Venice begin on June 23, 2013. As the finishing touches are being made to Titanic Belfast, the six-floor building and its surrounding plaza, more than 50,000 tickets have been pre-booked from 20 different countries including America, Australia, New Zealand and even Réunion, the French island in the Indian Ocean. Northern Ireland’s newest visitor center is a physical presence featuring an architectural design influenced by several maritime themes, including ice crystals, ships' hulls and the insignia of the White Star Line, the owners of the Titanic. Some 3,000 shards make up the building’s exterior while the plaza includes one of the world’s largest outdoor maps of the Northern Hemisphere, tracing Titanic’s route across the Atlantic. And dominating the approach to the building is a 15-ton “Titanic” sign recently winched into place. Laser-cut and made from eight solid-steel plates, the 15-meter-long sign is the same length as the private promenades available on RMS Titanic’s most expensive accommodation, the First Class Parlour Suites. The new sign is also the same weight as Titanic’s main anchor. Pre-booked ticketed sales include 1,000 group tours, and spaces are quickly running out for the opening day and other key dates during the upcoming Titanic 100 Festival in April. Titanic Belfast features nine interpretive and interactive galleries that explore the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Titanic, as well as the city and people which made her. Visitors will learn about the construction of RMS Titanic and the story of Northern Ireland’s industrial and maritime heritage. The building will also house temporary exhibits, a 1,000-seat banqueting suite, education and community facilities, catering and shopping space and a basement car park. Titanic Belfast will open on March 31. Click here to view the article

American Cruise Lines has announced that on March 18, a bright and sunny Sunday, the Queen of the Mississippi left the pier at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland, for its first sea trial. The vessel performed perfectly as the huge paddle-wheel churned the water and onlookers lined the riverbanks to watch. “The Queen of the Mississippi sets a new standard in river cruising and raises the bar for grand travel on the Mississippi River,” said Charles A. Robertson, President of American Cruise Lines. Robertson also revealed that the new riverboat is slightly faster than expected and is now nine weeks ahead of schedule. The Queen of the Mississippi will be completed in May, with its inaugural cruise scheduled for August 11, 2012 from New Orleans to Memphis. Currently, the interior is well underway with carpeting being installed throughout the ship and furniture beginning to go on board. All sliding glass doors leading to the private balconies are in place and painting is nearly complete. Click here to view the article

“In the unlikely event of having to abandon ship” is how the importance of lifeboat drills is typically stated to passengers. With the Costa Concordia grounding and the lingering pictures of the capsized ship, that event may not seem so unlikely anymore to the millions watching television and reading newspapers. But the fact is that major incidents are unlikely, considering that more than 19 million people cruised in 2011 and more are expected to cruise in 2012. Over the past 30 years, eight cruise ships have sunk, resulting in a total loss of life of 36 people, most of whom were crew on the tall ship Fantome, attempting to outrun a hurricane, when it sank in the Caribbean in 1998 (see sidebar). Today, the Concordia incident adds 17 more to that list, and perhaps 16 more that were missing at press time. While any loss of life is one too many, the modern-day cruise industry has a strong safety record, having carried more than 200 million passengers over the past 30 years. And not to forget, more than 4,000 people were safely evacuated off the Concordia under very difficult circumstances, despite the many media reports of panic and chaos. There are many systems and procedures in place to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, but it boils down to the human factor: the competence and professionalism of officers and crew, which in turn is put into place through training and recruitment. Life-saving equipment includes lifeboats on each side, capable of accommodating at least 50 percent of the people onboard, so that the lifeboats on both sides will accommodate at least 100 percent of the people onboard. In addition are inflatable rafts for at least 25 percent of the people onboard. The latest generation of lifeboats are bigger and better equipped, enclosed and self-righting. New regulations are intended to make release and retrieval systems safer. Ships also carry lifejackets for passengers and crew, as well as immersion suits for crew. With new ships designed according to the safe-return-to-port principle, however, lifesaving devices are intended as the last resort. Ships built after July 1, 2010 shall be “their own best lifeboat” – with redundancies in powerplants and other systems, ability to withstand a certain amount of damage to watertight departments, and provide “safe” areas for passengers and crew. The Concordia, however, suffered damage it was not designed to withstand, according to experts, damage that would be very difficult for any ship, whether old or new, to survive. And no matter how good the equipment is, it comes down the people operating the ships. The “unknown” variable is that no matter how qualified and competent, people can still suffer lapses in judgment or “brain freeze,” find themselves in an unlikely scenario of a chain of events that no one expected, or just bad luck. Costa officials have stated that there is no way they could have trained for the Concordia grounding. However, there are resources available for assessing and training officers from simulators to psychological profiling. Safeguards include bridge resource management and open working environments where everybody should be able to question the captain if they think he is wrong. Click here to view the article

Forever gone, and thankfully so, are the days when lifeboat drills are taken lightly. The words “in the unlikely event of abandoning ship” will be questioned for some time. The drills are no longer party time and hiding in the bathroom (to avoid participating) will no longer be tolerated. Having taken part in many lifeboat drills over the years, we have seen passengers show up late and some not showing up at all. However, in all fairness to the industry, most cruise lines have for some time been running much stricter drills than in the past and, in our experience, have been conducting lifeboat drills before departure. Still, with many passengers already in party moods, these exercises have seldom been taken very seriously. Following the Costa Concordia incident, Cruise Industry News was bombarded by so-called “ambulance chasers,” ranging from lawyers, who offered their expert opinions (while seeking exposure for their services), to consultants and publishing companies, trying to cash in on the tragedy with seminars, even dedicated publications tracking cruise ship incidents over the years. At Cruise Industry News, we have instead tried to ask some questions, which have been partially answered as follows: • If the chain of events started when the Concordia went off course, could this have been prevented by a simple alert system? As airlines track their planes, cruise lines can surely track their ships? • Could an active underwater sonar have alerted the bridge of the rocks? Since 2005, airplanes have been required to carry a “terrain avoidance” system in the U.S. • Would a cofferdam along the side of the hull along the largest compartments have protected the ship? A naval architect suggested that this may have resulted in more shallow damage and less flooding. • Would a double hull have prevented or slowed down the ingress of water, thus reducing the listing and facilitating evacuation into lifeboats? However, there are claims that double hulls cannot prevent flooding in high-energy contact situations, when the inner compartments will be penetrated as well. • In terms of bridge management, cruise lines today have two navigators manning the bridge, although the rules only require one. Does the pilot/co-pilot system provide enough checks and balances? • Can ships be built of thicker or stronger steel? In principle that is possible, according to naval architects, but with marginal effects. • And last, but not least, how did the officers, crew and staff manage to evacuate more than 4,000 people with only access to half the lifeboats and rafts? A laudable and under-appreciated feat of valor. Meanwhile, we are waiting for the results of the investigation being conducted by Italian authorities. However, that is not preventing us from going back to sea. Safe Sailing, Click here to view the article
