This is a clear cut case of a Cruise Line wanting to make profit. You do not take tourist and place them close to Polar Bears in the wild. They are wild animals and act when their territory is invaded. The Cruise Line cause this situation because they wanted profit. Polar Bears spend half their time hunting food and protecting the areas they live in. The cruise line created a situation by landing people on a Island area that is the habitat of Polar Bears. The bear was shot because the line does not value or respect them past the money they can make from them. Crew members are cheap labor and easy to replace. I found some more information, and with these bears being a endangered animal, under the regulations in place I do not believe any ship tours that land on the Island should be allowed. If you read the highlights it is clear the rules are not followed when you land passengers. The whole reason is to enter the bears area (not allowed) and it disturbs the bears (not allowed) and places human and bears in danger (also not allowed): It is a violation of Svalbard’s Environmental Protection Act’s general principle of protection to disturb polar bears. According to the Act “All species of flora and fauna, including their eggs, nests and lairs, are protected …” and “all access and passage in Svalbard shall take place in a way that does not harm […] or in any other way […] result in unnecessary disturbance of animals.” (Section 25 and 73 of Act of 15 June 2001 No.79 Relating to the Protection of the Environment in Svalbard). In Section 30 of the Svalbard Environmental Protection Act it is stated that: “It is prohibited to lure, pursue or otherwise seek out polar bears in such a way as to disturb them or expose either bears or humans to danger.” (Act of 15 June 2001 No.79 Relating to the Protection of the Environment in Svalbard). Seems clear the cruise line did not follow the regulations in place and resulted in the death of a protected animal and injury to a member of the crew.

Hope they can make a go of this, many have tried to start cruise lines and found out it is not a easy thing to do. A little surprised that Richard Branson wants to try his hand in this market.

The problem with the internet is people post false information and take no responsibility for it. The above statement is absolute false and not correct. Royal has built four Oasis class ships all 220,000 plus GT, the Quantum class ships are 168,000 GT. The MSC Meraviglia is 171,000 tons, and the Norwegian Joy is a little lager than the Quantum class ships (As per Meyer Weft Shipyard) so at least six current ships are larger than the Quantum class ships. Also not the largest cruise ship built and delivered to date Norwegian Joy is listed by the yard as the largest delivered cruise ship. Maybe before posting people should have the correct facts in place and not post what they want to believe.

Yes it is a small passage but very little current, moving very slow and not really a big deal. Every ship coming out of this yard must make this river passage, they have never had a single issue or problem doing it. It looks much harder than it really is. They have small tugs and tow ships to help them, the river is being check by the advance boats in front of the ship, it is a long process but not one that is a problem.

Back on the Sun Princess Hong Kong to Singapore Oct 1 to 6, 2018 Voyage S842N. It is another 5 night 6 day cruse with stops in Nha Trang & Ho Chi Minh City. Will be in Hong Kong a few days before the ship boards and stay in Singapore a few days after the cruise. Have tours plans for the two Vietnam ports if anyone else from the board is on the cruise let us know. As always I will be cruising with my wife Reynaline and we are being joined by another couple on their first cruise. Should be a fun trip. Todd

I believe the real story here is NCL loves to quote low prices and then add very high service fees. They have the highest daily gratuity fee of all the major lines. They do things like free drink packages and then hit the guest with $20 plus a day in services fees on the package. These things they can do with US Guest and the guest seem to act like sheep and just accept it but in China it will not fly. In China people want to have a total price, if you tell them a cruise is a amount equal to $1500 dollars they ill pay that and no more. Which put NCL in a very bad position, if they showed all the fees the cruise was much higher than other lines if they did not show the fees the guest would not pay them. Del Rio thought he could play the same games he does in the Western markets and found out China is a completely different ball game. So he has pulled his ships and is taking them back to the US Market were his bait and switch games will work. It will not change or hurt the market as other ships being added here by the other lines, Asia will still be the fastest growing market but NCL will not be part of it for the near future.
