ELLENVILLE<>EAST FLATBUSH

alt text

East Flatbush, formerly known as Rugby, is a suburban residential district lying south of East New York Avenue between Kings Highway and Nostrand Avenue. It contains chiefly one- and two-family houses. Along the southern fringe are open lots and occasional truck gardens. East Flatbush was developed in the 1920's and its growth continued through the depression of the 1930's. It was populated largely by the overflow from neighboring localities.

NORTH SLOPE<>ETHIOPA

alt text

Rastafari began in 1930 when Ras Tafari (later to be renamed Haile Sellassie) was crowned the King of Ethiopa. many Jamaicans believed this was the fulfilment of the prophecy of Marcus Garvey. Garvey prophesised that a black king would deliver all black people in exile around the world back to Africa. A forefront figure in the fourth decade of Rastafari, Mortimer Planno was arguably the reason Rasta was brought to the world. Planno, an educated and articulate Rasta elder and one of the main spokesman for Rasta, liasoning between the establishment and the Rasta community particularly in the sixties. He greeted Haille Selassie when he came to Jamaica in April of 1966. Planno and other Rasta elders often visited Kingston. It is said that this where Planno and Marley first met, whilst Marley was in his late teens. Planno was probably the greatest influence in Bob Marleys acceptance of Rastafari. The prime belief of rastas is that Haille Sellasie is G-d.
