SOS 4 Day Bahama Cruise

We are taking our daughter to the Bahamas for a 4 day 3 night Sovereign of the Seas cruise for her college graduation. She is getting her degree as a Vet Tech. Any suggestions as to shore excursions and any comments on the Sovereign of the Seas?

If this is your first trip to Nassau, you might not need to take a shore excursion. The ship docks right in the heart of town, and you can take a nice walking tour, on your own.

As you leave the dock area, you will see a tourist bureau building. You can stop for maps and booklets.

A good way to get a quick glimpse of town, and get into the island mood, is to take one of the horse & buggy rides ($10.00 p.p). It's laste about 20 minutes...

From there, go to Bay Street. Turn left (most people will be turning right) and go to Elizabeth Street. It's only a few blocks. Turn right on Elizabeth Street and you will get to the Queen's Staircase. It was carved from solid rock, by slaves, as an escape route from Fort Fincastle, which is at the top of the stairway. Admission to Ft. Fincastle is free. It's a small fort, shaped like a ship.

Across from the Fort, is the Water Tower, the highest point oon New Providence Island. The elevator is 50 cents.

From there, you can walk a few blocks to the Post Office and Government House.

A short walk from Government house will take you back to Bay Street, right near the Straw Market.

Now, you can do all your shopping and head back to the ship.

Many people do the tour in reverse, and wind up carrying their purchases as they tour the town...

Paradise Island used to be really nice, but ever since Atlantis started charging $25.00 p.p., just to look around, it doesn't pay to go there.

If you want to visit a casino, try the Crystal Palace. I prefer it, far more, than Atlantis. The dealers are friendlier and the slots looser. You can take a taxi, from town, or grab the #10 jitney, and ask the driver to tell you when you get to Cable Beach.

I love the Sovereign. Sailed her 5 times and would go again in a minute. She's an older ship but she is well taken care of and last I saw had a wonderful crew. We saw her last week docked in Nassau and she looked freshly painted on the outside. Should be a wonderful time for all.
