A salesman is planning a cruise for mainland medical doctors this summer, the first of its kind to feature continuing education workshops on board the Norwegian Cruise Line.

M. Steven Grant began marketing the seven-night Hawaii cruises this week -- in addition to a five-night cruise along the California coastline and a 12-night cruise from San Francisco to Hawaii on the Pride of Aloha.

For the seven-day interisland Hawaii cruises, Grant said he would like to use local physicians and speakers as much as possible.

"This is an accredited continuing medical education program, so doctors get up to certain number of hours credited towards their education, said Grant. "It's going to be good for local doctors who would like to do a speaking seminar, get paid and go on an interisland cruise."

Grant said he has been marketing primarily to physicians on the mainland. He estimates that at least six similar meetings take place on neighboring islands every month, under the sponsorship of hospitals and organizations, bringing 50 to 100 physicians to resorts each time.

Many such medical cruises also take place in Florida and Alaska, he said.

Cabins start at $1,225 per person, based on double occupancy while the course is $495.

The first California cruise departs from Los Angeles on June 13, while the first Hawaii cruise begins on Aug. 29. The seven-night Hawaii cruises run from August through December.
