I have just finished watching the movie 'Mrs Minerva", again. Not surprised it won the Oscar.

Over the last few weeks we have had some disagreements on politics on this website.

Have you watched this movie? How about "Hope and Glory"?

I grew up during this era, spent many a night in air raid shelters and have a very strong feeling about war and the security of the USA. I don't want my grandkids to grow up in the world that I did.

DaCruzNut, I don't know if you spent any time in Vietnam, I know Gogetter did, but surely you would NOT want your kids to have to go through that same experience. I don't know if George Bush is the answer, probably not, I hope that John Kerry is, but I do believe that the Clinton Administration was absolutely not.

Check out the two movies I mentioned. I'm sure you will enjoy them. even if you disagree with my viewpoint. If you view them, I'd be interested in hearing your comments.

I grew up in the era of “Duck & Cover.†I don’t know how many of you remember, but it was a frightening experience for us, in elementary school.

As the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union escalated, fear of the bomb and anxiety over the possibility of a nuclear war drove many Americans to dig deep into the earth in an effort to survive what seemed at the time the inevitable nuclear attack from our enemies. Ordinary Americans built bomb shelters in their backyards, often hiding them from their neighbors.

Therefore, “Bill’s†memories, in Hope And Glory were very real to me.

I have never heard of “Mrs. Minerva,†and couldn’t find it on the net, so I cannot comment…

I did not fight in Viet Nam, although several of my very close friends did. I was very much against the war.

I did, however, try to do something to make the world a better place. I helped fight the Civil Rights War, in the summer 0f 1961, riding a Freedom Bus...

No, George W. is NOT the answer (he's part of the problem....), but, none of the Democrats excite me either. Where's Bill Bradley when you need him?

Hi all - my Mom grew up in England during the war and has a lot of tales to tell - many of them funny - stiff upper like British humor. She and dad met and married over there and today would have been their 58th wedding anniversary, but we lost Dad last March. I enjoyed Hope and Glory and Mrs. Miniver, but when I feel in the mood for British - I go for the "Carry On..." movies - so funny. Have a good one - Jennifer

Thank you, hazelson. With the correct spelling, I was able to locate "Mrs. Miniver."

I found a complete copy of the novel, and read through a good deal of it.

Those times were, certainly, frightening. However, unfortunately, they still go on. Only now, the bombs don't fall from the skies, they are strapped to terrorists.

In Israel, they face this terror on a very regular basis. Baghdad! Northern Iraq! Northern Ireland! Even threats, here, on our own soil. As yet, mercifully avoided, but real threats remain.

I must go back to my youth, as if I ever left it....

WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE

words and music by Pete Seeger

performed by Pete Seeger and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger

Where have all the flowers gone?

Long time passing

Where have all the flowers gone?

Long time ago

Where have all the flowers gone?

Girls have picked them every one

When will they ever learn?

When will they ever learn?

Where have all the young girls gone?

Long time passing

Where have all the young girls gone?

Long time ago

Where have all the young girls gone?

Taken husbands every one

When will they ever learn?

When will they ever learn?

Where have all the young men gone?

Long time passing

Where have all the young men gone?

Long time ago

Where have all the young men gone?

Gone for soldiers every one

When will they ever learn?

When will they ever learn?

Where have all the soldiers gone?

Long time passing

Where have all the soldiers gone?

Long time ago

Where have all the soldiers gone?

Gone to graveyards every one

When will they ever learn?

When will they ever learn?

Where have all the graveyards gone?

Long time passing

Where have all the graveyards gone?

Long time ago

Where have all the graveyards gone?

Covered with flowers every one

When will we ever learn?

When will we ever learn?
