Carnival Paradise to longer be "smoke free"

Bob Dickinson of Carnival recently indicated that the Paradise, which has operated since its introduction in 1998 as a smoke-free vessel, will no longer retain that designation. "When we analyzed our redeployment strategy, the Paradise, based on its size and attributes, was the obvious choice to offer a fresh new short cruise alternative from California. And, with only one ship operating that program, we could not limit it to non-smokers," he said.

I have been on the Paradise several times, and I just loved the no-smoking designation. I remember like it was yesterday the extremely strict rules they enforced in regards to smoking onboard. On one cruise someone actually lit up as the ship was sailing out of Miami on day 1...so what happened to them? The ship stopped right in the middle of the channel, a coast guard cutter pulled up alongside, and the couple was taken off the ship! There were always many stories such as that.

What always stuck out in my head were the measures Carnival took to ensure that smoke did not get into the walls of the ship etc...even during construction, the workers could not even smoke on the ship! I wish Carnival could keep the Paradise smoke free, and I'm disappointed that this will not be the case.   Considering she was a 1 of a kind ship in that aspect, it's a shame that will be no longer!

I feel Carnival failed in its attempt to have a smoke free ship. I believe if the ship was smaller and changed itineraries several times a year that a smoke free ship could be a success. I have been on the Paradise and had a great time. I have also read on many boards where people said they would have gone on the Paradise again if it changed itineraries now and than. I did both east and west Caribbean on the Paradise and seeing I really don't like the Caribbean going back to do the same routes would not appeal to me. If the Paradise had done an occasional Panama Canal or a run to Hawaii or a run to Alaska I would deffinately have considered going on the Paradise again and again.

I'm just curious why, if they needed a Fantasy-class ship on the west coast, why they bothered moving the one they did (Elation or Ecstacy, I can't remember which) back east when Pride went west? They probably would have done the same thing if they had kept Paradise in the Caribbean out of Galveston or NOLA or wherever Elation/Ecstacy is now, and removed the smoke-free thing anyway.

I think the writing was on the wall though. After 6 or 7 years, Paradise was still the only smoke-free ship of the big lines, so it obviously wasn't an idea that took flight. I've never been bothered by smoke on ships, since most dining rooms and show lounges are smoke free anyway. I'm used to being around smoke though, so it doesn't bother me. I can see where others can be bothered though.
