old clothes

A few years back, I read on a cruise forum about people taking all their old, soon-to-be-discarded clothes to wear on a cruise and then either throwing the clothes out or giving them away so that they don't have any baggage to take home with them. I guess maybe they would pack in a soft duffle bag or something. This wasn't for really casual cruises like Windjammer or rent your own sailboat, it was for big cruises, like we talk about here. The discussion was quite a lively one, with many people lamenting the fact that cruises have gotten too casual and berating the people that are taking their worn out clothes and the people taking their worn out clothes defending their decision to do that. Have you heard of this?

I have heard of folks doing that with underwear, but not their whole wardrobe! But, you know now that I think about it, I have seen some folks aboard ship who looked like that was what they were doing.

As I write this my wife is busy running around making a list of what she is going to wear every night. Heaven forbid she should be seen in the same thing twice!

Oh well, by this time tomorrow night she will have to pack as the limo comes Sunday morning to take us to the airport at 8:30AM. Bet she is just closing her luggage then!

But, she always knows when she is finished packing -- when the closet is empty!

That is too funny, but tell Roe that I do the same thing. I may start out packing a lot earlier but still doing the same last minute stuff. The same outfit twice? I can't do that either, though I may start one of these days.

We do know people who do long road trips and they take clothing they plan on getting rid of , wear it one last time on the road and then leave it wherever they are so they can come home with just their bare necessities and not have loads of laundry to wash . I do think that they keep their underwear though. Maybe I'll ask them about that. :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

I am unapologetic about not travelling light. My long suffering spouse always makes that oomph sound when he lifts my luggage into the car but I think he's over acting. I've travelled a lot and this is the first time that I won't be limited by having to carry my own bags through airports or by airline luggage restrictions...I live in Vancouver so just have to travel 15 minutes by car to downtown and get on a ship. And, emptying one's closet is actually a VERY efficient way of packing as you're certain not to have forgotten anything when you see all those empty hangers. I always pack with a list though. One time I got a little too sure of myself, when I was travelling a lot for work and decided that I didn't need a list. Got to Toronto, meetings the next morning, unpacking my bags and realized that I had packed plenty of tops but no bottoms, not a pair of pants or a skirt! Fortunately, it was early enough to go shopping and I knew the city so went straight to a shop where I knew I could find a couple of things to wear. Not an option on a cruise ship.

Just where do they leave these old clothes? Do they leave them in the stateroom, on shore somewhere? If they are abandonedin the stateroom. aren't they sent back to you? Sorry, I'm just slightly confused!

Tamara, too funny but I agree with you. And empyting one's closet , especially if you do it way before you're cruise, is a great way to find those items that have been missing for a while. It's also a good time to get rid of some stuff.

doglady, The people we know who do road trips and don't want to return home with clothing to wash, leave stuff in the motels on the way. This way, they figure a maid might find it and enjoy it . That's their way of thinking. Gee, it just occurred to me as I was typing this that I hope they're not leaving the clothing instead of a tip.
