Tamara
I reallyreallyreally want to go dog sledding in Alaska. I went on an eight hour trip in Canmore, Alberta (a bit of a dog sledding mecca) a few years back and got hooked. If I lived in a cold weather climate, that would definitely be my sport of choice. It's just a fantastic experience, and, I was surprised to see such hard working dogs, very unlike my couch and bed loving canine at home. I'm cruising to Alaska in May, and wonder if it's too late for sledding. I think there's a tour that you can get with a helicopter ride to a glacier and then a few hours of dog sledding. Has anyone heard of this?
michelleJ
Hi Tamara, I have never been to Alaska but hubby and I are talking about a cruise next year. The dog sled sounds fun, hope you find a tour to do it and let us know how it was. You might try going to a web site of a port you will be at and checking what they offered locally. Have a wonderful time! Michelle
jbond
We were on an Alaskan cruise the end of June and they were offering the dog sled excursion. This is from the RCI excursion page, as you can see it's quite expensive. Glacier Dogsled Adventure via Helicopter Approximate Duration: 3 Hours 15 Minutes Adult: 419.00 (USD) | Child: 419.00 (USD) The webpage is RCI Then choose "reserve shore excursions" at the bottom of the page. You don't need a reservation to access it.
PEB
They do have dog sledding tours in Alaska and some are tied into helicopter tours. The helicopter tours can get you out to where the ice and snow is. There also may be tours that use sleds with wheels on where the there may not be as much snow. The tours are quite expensive. Tamara
I've emailed a couple of dog sled companies about having a private tour. I'm not really into doing a two hour thing with a bunch of other people. I just want to get off the ship and have as much sled time as possible. I know it will be expensive, but it will be the one thing that I want to do on this trip. I love mushing, and I have to have a break from the bingo and relaxation on board ship. It will break the budget, but I will forego the planned spa treatment, given what I've heard about the inflated prices and I won't be taking any other tours as mother-in-law doesn't want to. The only other extra expense will be my bar bill. And, about that, what are the prices like on Holland America? Mother-in-law likes a beer before dinner and was planning on taking a six pack on board but that's out of the question, so, can she have a warm beer delivered to the cabin before dinner and what does that cost? I like a martini before dinner and maybe a split of wine with dinner and maybe a brandy after (not every day, of course, in real life) so what do those sorts of things cost?
