City and Cruise Lines Working on Pier Deal

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was expected to announce the outlines of the arrangement on Monday, The New York Times reported Saturday, citing an executive familiar with the deal.

Many details of the pact, which involves Carnival Cruise Lines and the Norwegian Cruise Line, had not yet been worked out, and city officials declined to confirm or deny the report, the Times said.

Cruise line operators have long complained about crowded waiting rooms and inadequate infastructure at Manhattan's West Side passenger ship terminal, which served about 887,000 passengers last year.

The city has said it plans to outfit the West Side piers with new stairways, escalators and elevators, new signs and more taxi stands; it also hopes to build a $20 million interim terminal in Brooklyn.
