Captain's Table

What is the deal with being invited to dine with the Captain? Is that just for the people in the big cabins, or do they choose people that might be interesting conversationalists, even though they're staying in a cabin without a window? Does someone just come up to you and say that you're invited?

I think that just about anyone could be invited to the Captain's table. It could be someone in a suite, or it could be someone in an inside cabin who impressed the social hostess, and she thought they would make good conversationalists. They could also be friends of the Captain or a celebrity or well known person.

I have heard people say that they didn't know why they were asked to the Captain's table, except that they were talking to the social hostess, and then they received their invitation later on in the day.

On my honeymoon cruise we were invited to a special cocktail party in the Captain's suite. I have no clue why we were chosen, except that we had one of the Deluxe cabins on that cruise. It was a small ship, and there were no suites, but we had one of the better cabins. We hadn't told anyone before hand that we were on our honeymoon, so I don't think that was the reason.

Been to the Captain's Table several times. Lots of things factor in as Shari said above. But, it is NOT just the suite passengers who are invited.

Aboard the Sun Princess, no invite from the Captain as yet.

I've been to the Capt'n's table several times. Don't know why. Cheap inside cabin, so it isn't just the Suite folk. There was an invite dreivered to the cabin the first day.Hostess would not divulge how people were chosen.

My husband mentioned to one of his customers (we own a resturant in NYC) that we would be onboard the Millie the following week. When we arrived at the terminal and were checking in, the clerk left for a moment and returned with the social hostess. She introduced herself and led us right on to the ship. From there on we were VIP'd. Sat with the Capt. at dinner and I also was invited to tea with the Capt. wife. Don't know why he did this for us, but it sure was nice.

We've been on somewhere between 17-20 cruises. We lost track. We have never been invited to the captain's table. Should we be insulted??? :huh: Only kidding. :cheesy:

So I shan't feel rejected if I don't get an invitation, then. Have any of you seen the British "Jeeves and Wooster" series? There's one episode where Bertie Wooster is travelling from London to New York and is dining at the Captain's table. The Captain is French and very sophisticated and Bertie makes an absolute ass of himself trying to pretend that he is up to the Captain's level. Definitely a lesson in how not to behave!
