Have You Ever Been Diverted?

Last year, we were to cruise to San Juan, St. Thomas, and Tortola on the Carnival Legend. Due to Hurricane Isobel sitting just north of Puerto Rico, we were diverted to Key West, Nassau, and Freeport. We got a $50 per person credit, but many people were still disappointed. Since my wife and I have never been to any of the Islands we were going, we were fine with it. The only problem was that the ship's shops had only items from the islands we were supposed to go to. I did send a St. Thomas post card to my office saying" Wish you were here. As a matter of fact, wish I was there".

Actually, on the first cruise we took back in 1999, we were cruising to Bermuda in October and were hit by Hurricane Irene and had to sail out of her way (we still had 30-35 foot waves). We lost a day in Bermuda, and there was no credit given. The hurricane was exciting.

How many others were also diverted?

We have never been diverted, however, once on an eastern Caribbean cruise there was a hurricane in the gulf. When we arrived in St Thomas it looked like a cruise ship traffic jam, as the ships on the western itineraries diverted to eastern.

Also, one time we missed Half Moon Cay because of rough seas and received a $100 credit.

Last December I booked a W. Carib itinerary that included Cozumel, Roatan, Belize, Cancun because I am a snorkeler and that sounded great. Roatan was raining an rough, and the next morning they cancelled Belize due to the weather making tendering dangerous, and we diverted to Costa Maya. It was our first time there and we did enjoy it. No one seemed upset.

We've been diverted a couple of times, the best was to St. Barts which at the time was rarely visited by cruise ships. It was nice cause we knew it was probably the only chance we'd have to visit there.

We were chased out by Hurricane Hugo a few years ago. We missed St Barts and docked in San Juan a day early. RCI had pre-arranged all the flights out and gave us a 25% discount on our next cruise.

We missed Ocho Rios on a Splendour cruise in '99 due to high seas. We just got another day at sea, not even a free drink.

Yes, several times...

Some were due to bad weather at the time of our visit. We missed Cozumel once due to a tropical storm, and we also missed Sydney Nova Scotia one time due to the remnants of a hurricane in the area. Both times worked out well as we got to overnight in our next scheduled port of call... a real treat.

One time, we missed a port of call because of bad weather weeks earlier. This happened to us when we were to visit one of the private islands. Problem was a hurricane had paid a visit beforehand and there was too much debris on the island for us to visit.

The strangest one was a port cancellation due to a damaged pier. We were supposed to dock in Costa Maya a few years ago, but the dock had sustained some damage from a prior visit from another ship. The port actually shut down for a time. We were rerouted to Roatan.

We considered all of these to be adventures.

A couple of the above sound like my previous experiences. We were on Westerdam in November 95, and were sent to St Bart's instead of St Maarten due to previous hurricane damage. We had this happen again in Nov 99 on the Grand Princess, when St Maarten again was damaged. This time we went to San Juan. We also were kept out of Sydney Nova Scotia due to hurricane remnants, althought this wasn't decided until 7am and we were already in the harbour. We just couldn't dock due to the wind.

We, too, were diverted because of Isador. We were headed to Progresso Mexico and went to Freeport instead. When this was announced - the entire ship cheered. Guess we didnt miss anything in Progresso! The cruise line had all kinds of on board activites during the days at sea since we had an extra day at sea because of this.
