jbond
Asolutely. We have had passports since we became citizens. Naturalization Certicates cannot be copied, against the law, and so we don't want to mess around with loose pieces of paper and chance mislaying them. Are passports required for cruises, not sure anymore. A couple of years ago Costa Rica said passports were required to visit their country, they have since changed it to multiple day stays. Same with Aruba last year, but after much confusion, passports were not required for cruisers. Personally I think that a passport is easier, it's a small document, sturdier than most single sheet BC's, and you only need the one document. Just renewed ours earlier this year. Costs $55 and lasts 10 years.

iriscruiser
Gogetter, My husband and I just got our passports in May of 04, we were born in 1957 and 1960 and had no problem. The only scary thing was we had to give them our original birth cert to do it. It took about 6 weeks, I was very happy to get everything back. The passport is much sturdier then a B/C because it is book form and made to open and closed where your B/C gets creased from being folded and breaks down over time. We used ours to get into Canada when we went to Niagara Falls. It was quick and painless compared to people showing B/C and driver license.

Popdog
In addition to the birth certificate you need a picture I.D. Passport accomplishes both requirements. We always take our BC's with us and keep them in the safe in our stateroom...just in case.

KeithnRita
After 9/11 we figured it was just a matter of time when passports would be required for some ports. Once we applied we received them in 10 days. That amazed us, as we did not pay extra for speedy delivery. The great thing is they are now good for 10 years and it kind of makes you feel proud to have a USA passport, or Canadian passport, or passport from whatever country you live in.
Shari2
I agree with getting a passport. We got one for our last cruise, and it was a breeze to get it. There wasn't even anyone in line when we went to get it. It arrived within a couple of weeks, and makes you feel a little more secure when traveling. I hadn't heard anything about not taking birth certificates before 1985, so I don't know about that, but I would just get the passport. It's the way to go!
