jrnygrl
Hi! Trying to sort through all the info online regarding travel insurance and its quite overwhelming. Would be interested in hearing everyones insight on which companies provide the most reliable policies vs those to avoid. It will be just me and my husband...we are in our 30's and relatively healthy. Thanks! Beth
zima
I would purchase the insurance through the company you booked your cruise. We never purchased insurance before but now will not go without it. Last year we booked a cruise in Feb. that sailed in mid-Oct. (Without insurance) Then in Aug. I had an accident and severely broke my leg. Was in a body cast for 6 1/2 weeks. I was not allowed any weight on that leg when I came out of the cast and was in a wheel chair. Luckily my Doctor OK'd me to go on the cruise (as long as I followed his rules). If he hadn't ok'd me, we would have been OUT a lot of money since we did not take the insurance. We have insurance for this years cruise.
KeithnRita
The best kind of insurance you can purchase is the insurance you will never need or not need for a very long time. Since travel can be interrupted do to weather, injury, accident, etc., we always purchase the insurance. You could also have an accident, injury, or sickness while on a cruise or in a port, and having insurance for this seems to us worth the costs. The costs of the insurance is based on your age and total cost of the trip. With you guys being in your 30's, your insurance is less costly than ours, being we are in our 50's. Insurance is one of the few businesses that can age discriminate! We have purchased trip insurance both directly and thru the cruise lines. TheSkipper
Just had diner Saturday night with a couple we have cruised with who really used their insurance. In January they were on the Radience of the Seas and while ashore he had a heart attack. They got him back to the ship and he was hospitialized at the next stop Grand Cayman for 8 days and then returned to the states for more hospitalization. Insurance paid for everything and is still paying for followup exams etc. and picking us the slack for whatever their ragular hospital insurance does not couple. They said "without this insurance, we would be bankrupt." Convinced me to start using insurance. The company they used was Travel Guard. hazelson
We are fortunate to have a good extended medical through my dh's job. They even ship our bodies home should we die of pure joy on a cruise LOL (what a way to go!) We always buy trip insurance wherever we go because you just never know. Our son "babysits" the critters when we go on vacation. If anything happened to him (touch wood nothing will) we would have to cancel. He's young and in good health but he does drive like a maniac lol. I can't imagine anyone else taking on our two cats, two dogs, two lovebirds and a pond full of fish - but he does it willingly every time. We are very lucky. And you just never know when a problem will arise - especially as we get on in years - and on and on and on - LOL. Trip Insurance - don;t leave home without it. JohnG
Generally the insurance you purchase yourself or through your TA is cheaper than the insurance the cruise line offers. See http://www.insuremytrip.com/ and get a quote and compare.
GottaCruz
Luckily, my parents had gotten cruise insurance through their travel agent last year. A few weeks before their cruise, my dad passed away. Although he was 84 years old, he was in excellent health, no problems whatsoever. Because their cruise involved my mom's best friend, she decided to go but did receive back my dad's portion of the cruise. We always get the insurance through our agent . We have friends who were supposed to cruise on NCL and one of them broke their leg a few days before their cruise and couldn't go. They lost all that money. This was several years ago and I know they were trying to get some of it back. I don't remember whatever happened but they say they'll never book a cruise without that insurance again. You just never know. good luck whatever you decide.
