If you feel that the walkie talkies are necessary for your peace of mind, then yes use them. But please be courteous of other passengers. Keep the talks short and brief...if your kids start missuing the walkie talkies, take them away and make them stay with you for an afternoon - that will teach them a lesson! :) And please, as you have said, don't use them in the dining rooms, show lounges, etc. Common courtesy is essential when sharing public spaces.

That being said, I hope you and your kids have a wonderful cruise!

I honestly can't say that I've ever been annoyed with people using walkie-talkie's on a cruise. It's the parents who don't care in the least what their kids are doing that annoys me. Do whatever it takes to keep them safe, and give you some peace of mind.

Thanks

I'm also checking with our cell phone company and see if they would work and at what costs as I read some places there are no roaming charges..

Might be cheaper than walkie talkies..and less annoying to others..

Keep ya posted

Several years ago, we cruised with another family that also had 2 kids. The mom gave each kid a walkie talkie and every hour she was yelling into that thing- and her kids were 16 and 14 at the time. She did it in the middle of our meals, the middle of conversations, etc. She was just obnoxious. Needless to say, we never cruised with them again. By the way, we had met this family on a cruise site . It turns out they were from our area so we had met them all for dinner at a local restaurant before the cruise. We haven't socialized with them since that cruise, but we do run into them locally, once in a while.

anyway, most people I've seen using the walkie talkies are just fine. If it gives you peace of mind, I would definitely use them. I would be using them with my daughter but I know she would just lose it.

What we do, is make her check in with us every couple of hours. We tell her exactly where we'll be and she knows that the consequence of not showing up on time is having to sit with us the rest of the day. At 13 , that would be torture for her. Needless to say, she always checks in with us right on time. This gives us peace of mind. Do whatever makes you comfortable. It's your vacation and you should use whatever tools you can to ensure a relaxing, enjoyable cruise for the whole family. Cheryl

We've used walkie talkies on the last 3 cruises we took, and will take them in November on our cruise as well. They are a great way to keep track of our son and have peace of mind. We keep the volumes down very low and keep talking to a minimal. And we never take them into any kind of shows, etc. The key is to remember to be courteous of others while using them.

YIKES  ...No we wouldn't be using them that way, but I have been told that sometimes they are hard to hear from and you might have to get a little loud to talk..

I wouldn't ever want to interupt someone else, we are very aware that these could be used in a way that they could interfer with others enjoyment..and I know how frustrating it is when others don't watch there kids....mine would be glued to our side if they were up to anything they shouldn't be...

Still waiting to see if phones will be ok..

Thanks for your post

Glad they worked well for you....I agree volume down and I would only try to reach them in areas that I wouldn't bother anyone...

Still going to see maybe if the phones would work..or maybe get them all alarmed watches so they know if we set them to check in every 2 hours that they do...they loose track of time, and I'd be in a panick..want to avoid any heart failure by mom during the trip

Thanks for your post

IMOH, leave the walkie-talkies home.....

I don't think there's any place that is safer than a ship. Yes, they should check in every few hours, but other than that, give them some freedom.

And, think of how embarassing it is for them when their with thier new friends, and mom calls....

Relaxe and you'll all enjoy the cruise more.

my opinion.

I have mixed feelings about this. I have two sons whom we took on many cruises as they were growing up.

My thoughts always ran the same as Jeff's do...'there's no place safer than a ship'. My MAIN concern was that the boys not go close to the railing and horse around. I was always afraid one of them would throw the other one overboard!

But, these days, there are a lot of crazy people in this world, and you never know who is on board. Will the kids be in the camps? In that case, I wouldn't worry too much. But if they'll be on their own, and for your own peace of mind, go ahead and get the walkie talkies.

I have to tell you though...knowing MY OWN kids...the walkie talkies wouldn't be returning home with us...they'd be lost for sure!
