This happenned to us on our first cruise. We asked the Maitre'd if he would ask the couple at a nearby table for four if we might join them. He did and we did.

She was nice, he was a bit of a pill, but it was better than having to talk to each other. (I jest.)

We have been very fortunate to have great tablemates for the exception of a few people on our Panama Canal cruise. There was an incident where I bit into a cracked peppercorn that our assistant steward had just put on my salad and it brought tears to my eyes. I am not a fan of pepper. I kindly asked him to exchange my salad and please try and remember not to put pepper on my salad in the future. The next night he came up alongside me and before I could say anything he put pepper on the salad. I didn't ask him to exchange it this time but just opted to not eat it. I reminded him though that I prefer not to have pepper on my salad. The next night I saw him coming so I put my hand over the salad to remind him. I got a few glares from a few people but all was well. The next night I didn't get my hand up fast enough because I was talking and he got pepper on the salad. I got alittle upset this time and spoke to him again as polite as I could. Those that gave me glares before now thought I was being petty. I didn't think so, after all I couldn't eat it.

The head waiter was coming around asking how we were enjoying our meal and if there was anything he could do so I took the opportunity to tell him about the pepper on the salad. He said he would take care of it and I thought that would be the end, but those that were giving me glares now spoke up and told me that I just got the poor lad in trouble and he may lose his job because I couldn't deal with alittle pepper. Well needless to say they were very unkind to us for the rest of the cruise. We should have asked for another table but the restaurant was full.

Thank goodness this was the only time we were disappointed with our tablemates. On our other cruises we had fabulous tablemates and hung out with them during the shows etc.

I look forward to our cruise this year and the prospect of having great tablemates.

We have always had great table mates. Visited with them after the cruise and been on repeat cruises with one couple. The closest we came to a problem was on an RCI cruise a few years ago. We had a table for eight. There were two guys, who didn't know each other before the cruise and were at opposite ends of the political sprectrum. The liberal was very quick witted and delighted in baiting the super conservative. It got close to getting out of hand, but halfway through the cruise, they both apologised to the table and it was smooth sailing. I think the wives had a lot to do with the apology.
