For all those that have spent time in the Yucatan Peninsula, and considering what you Know about the intra-structure of Eastern Mexico here it is.<]

The Topic: In your opinion how long will it take for Cozumel and Cancun to recover economically from Wilma?<]

Even though the region had 64 inches of rain in less than 24 hours, are they constructed to bounce back? Would you say that Wilma is to Mexico’s as Katrina was to the US?

Opinions sought, Discussion welcomed!

Hi Joey...

I was only in that area once, and it was back in the '80s. I just heard that Playa Del Carmen was completely destroyed, and I know that Cancun and Cozumel took a real beating. I don't know about Playa, but my guess is, it will take a year or two for Cancun and Cozumel to get back to some kind of normalcy.

I'm guessing here on all of this, but I do think that the Mexican government will try to get Cozumel and Cancun up and going for tourists as soon as possible, because they bring in so much revenue and bring so many jobs to the areas. I would think they would try to have tourists coming in as soon as a few months or sooner depending on the damage and how long it takes to get things up and running.

I also think that the MExican government will do all things possible to get Cancun and Cozumel ready for this upcoming vacation season.

Tourism is the only thing that keeps these places running and it will be more devastating to those places if they do not get tourists back ASAP.

Now I do not know much about Mexico and if they even have the capabilities to repair these places quickly.

But for those poor people that live there and rely on tourist $'s I hope they are able to get the tourists back soon.
