There wasn't really too much on the national news about it...they don't seem to know whether it hit something or not. I'll bet that was pretty scary for the passengers...I'd be freaking out if I heard a a noise and felt a vibration. I love cruising, but don't want it to include anything like that.

Is Princess moving to Brooklyn?? Thinking of cruising on the Crown Princess in late September and wondering if they are moving out of Manhatten?? :cool:

They grounded on a sandbar...got stuck, had to return to Ft. Lauderdale to do repairs, and it's possible that they may have to drydock.

Princess is moving to Brooklyn. I'll be on the Crown Princess in July, and that's where we'll leave from. I'll let you know how the cruise was. :grin:

Yes, Rogue is correct. In general, Princess will cruise from Brooklyn. other than the rare times when there are too many Princess and Cunard ships in port. Other Carnivalized lines, including HAL and Carnival, will stay in Manhattan.

QM2 held at Fort Lauderdale after pod mishap (01/18/2006)

FORT LAUDERDALE -- A propulsion pod on the Queen Mary 2 was damaged after the pod hit the side of the underwater ship channel during its departure from Fort Lauderdale.

The QM2, which was departing Fort Lauderdale Jan. 17 during a cruise from New York to Rio de Janeiro when the pod came into contact with the side of the channel, was returned to its berth here. The ship was scheduled to depart on its revised voyage to Rio de Janeiro -- using the remaining three functional propulsion pods -- late Jan. 18.

In a statement, Cunard Line said the damaged pod does not control the shipÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s maneuverability, and it stressed that sailing on one less pod does not affect the safety of its passengers or crew.

Operating on one less pod will slow the speed of the ship, but Cunard said that beyond the current voyage the impact of the shipÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s speed on future itineraries would not be material.

UPDATE: QM2 Underway After Delay; Ports Canceled

Cunard's Queen Mary 2, which was delayed in Ft. Lauderdale since Tuesday due to mechanical problems with one of four propulsion pods, is finally underway. The ship left Port Everglades yesterday at 6 a.m. following technical work to decommission the problem pod.

Because of the holdup in Ft. Lauderdale, Cunard has altered Queen Mary 2's sailing schedule (the ship had barely just begun its 38-night South American voyage); calls at St. Kitts, Barbados and Salvador have been canceled, and the ship is instead proceeding to Rio de Janeiro. The ship is expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro at approximately midnight on January 26.

Passengers will receive a 50 percent refund for the initial segment from New York (or Ft. Lauderdale) to Rio; guests continuing through the second segment ending in Valparaiso on February 8, or the last segment ending in Los Angeles on February 22, will be provided a six-day pro-rated refund, according to a statement released by the line.

Though Queen Mary 2 can operate on three pods safely, speed is affected; after Rio de Janeiro, Cunard will continue to review the itinerary and make additional changes as necessary.
