Jason
UC Berkeley and five international universities are sponsoring an unusual program for students interested in seeing the world during their college careers: a shipboard semester abroad. The collegiate ship with 600 students aboard departs from Athens on Jan. 10 on its inaugural voyage, touching five continents as it stops in Casablanca, Morocco; Buenos Aires; Cape Town, South Africa, and ports in Australia, India, Singapore and Cyprus. The voyage ends back in Athens on May 2. The program is called the Scholar Ship, a venture backed by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. The cruise line will operate the ship and Cal's Division of International and Area Studies will serve as of one of six academic stewards providing academic oversight and curriculum guidance. The other stewards are top universities in China, Mexico, Morocco, Australia and Ghana. An announcement by the Scholar Ship last week said the experience is designed to give students an academically rigorous semester with the benefits of an international faculty and student body. The program is open to undergraduates and graduates. The cost is $19,950. Source: Rick DelVecchio, San Francisco Chronicle
