RCI has a rule that doesn't allow individuals under 23 years old to share a cabin, unless they are married. At least one person has to be 23 or older.

When it comes to serving alcohol, RCI's policy is that 18-21 can buy and consume beer and wine, over 21 they can buy any kind of alcohol. Again a parent or guardian, over 23, must sign a waiver for the 18-21 y.o.

There was an interesting post on another board about a couple getting married and having their reception on board an RCI ship. The bride was only 20. The bride's mother had to sign a waiver to allow the bride to drink champagne at the reception.

I think they changed that rule in 1998. We were able to send my oldest son and his friend on a cruise for their high school graduation in 1997 on the Viking Serenade...both were 18 years old.

The next year we wanted to send my youngest and his friend for their graduation, but the rules changed. Hubby and I went with them on the cruise and just put the two of them together in the room.

On Carnival you have to be 21 or older to cruise alone. If you are under 21, then you need someone in the room with you who is 25 years old.

That same son was 24 years old when he and his 22 year old wife got married the beginning of last year. They had to have signed documentation that they had gotten married the day before...because they didn't have a marriage certificate yet. (paperwork takes time to clear)

From the other boards, it appears that the guardians were two women who were mothers of two of the young men on the cruise.

It also mentioned that the parents of the dead man had hired a lawyer and proposed to sue the cruise line. No specific reason for the suit was given, but they were apparently upset at the delay in RCI informing the Coast Guard.

I think, with some of these lawsuits, that the family of the victims, really do know that the victims were responsible for their own actions. However, I think that when people hurt so very badly after the loss of a loved one, they just want to strike out at someone and the only one possible to strike out at is the CruiseLine. I think it's human nature to want to blame someone other than your own at times like that when people are thinking with their hearts and not their brains.

We were recently on the Fascination and we were sitting next to a rowdy bunch of guys, with an older man. They were on a "bachelor party weekend." The guys all looked so young but you can't tell by looks. They were doing quite a bit of drinking and I seriously doubt that they would be doing all their drinking with their chaperone present. There were about 10 young men. I just looked at them and thought to myself," I hope to God that all of these young men stay safe on this cruise. "
