Need Help on Alaska Cruise

I'll be sailing next month on Celebrity Mercury from Seattle to Alaska.

I've done some preparing by reading the Celebrity site on what I might need to pack.

To be frank, I feel a little intimidated because I'm a Carnival type of cruiser. I'm afraid that I have to wear a shirt and tie to dinner almost every night. I don't mind dressing up for formal evenings but I don't want to have to wear a jacket and tie on the other evenings. My luggage will be heavy enough as it is with the airlines only allowing 50 lbs. now and the heavier clothing because of the cooler climate. I don't want to pack a bunch of jackets.

CruiseCrazies, give me some ideas on what to pack for Alaska in June. You know I'm not the jeans type of guy either.

Here are my questions:

-What is informal wear for Celebity?

-What is casual wear for Celebrity?

-What do cruisers wear on sea days?

In the brochures everybody is dressed to the hilt all the time. I'm telling you now, I'm not wearing a smoking jacket and bowtie around that Celebrity ship all day.

Thanks for your help.

Mebert - Dh has the same problem - and we could actually leave from Vancouver so we wouldn't need to fly. Getting him to "dress up" for two formal nights would be about it - a Blazer and slacks at that!

Too bad you aren't sailing out of Vancouver - we could have been your official tour guides!!!

schatje, JoeyandDavid, and hazelson,

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to go out an get some polo shirts. My cruise wardrobe is mostly for the Caribbean.

I try to travel with one piece of luggage and one carry-on. I just hate taking an extra jacket. My luggage is so heavy. It looks like I have to pull out the garment bag portion of my luggage set.

I'm getting really anxious about this because I like formal evenings but I don't care for informal evenings. On Celebrity's site they suggest there will be two formal evenings, two informal evenings and three casual evenings. It's that extra jacket that's bothering me.

Mebert, once again you're overly concerned about clothing. You'll be fine. No one will shoot you if you don't bring a tie and jacket; but just one will do if you want to travel light. Celebrity, oddly, is expensive for laundry but reasonable for dry cleaning; so if you bring a suit and a matching pair of slacks, you can get trhe suit dry cleaned, same day, for $9 or so ($6 for ext day service)

On the cruise to Bermuda that ended today, we had two formal nights, both when we were at sea.

Casual (4) Informal (1) Formal (2- Sunday and Thursday)

A guy near us wore sweaters every night, and no one threw him out.

Mebert, regarding the extra jacket... do what I do and wear it on the plane. I usually stow it, inside out, in the overhead bin, atop my carry-on, and no problems yet.

If you do bring the jacket, you'll just need the one as nobody's going to notice if you wear it twice.

As for daytime wear on Celebrity, the only thing I noticed is that they didn't allow shorts or T-shirts in the dining room for lunch. Otherwise, I've found that it's no different than any other lines.

JoeyandDavid, Joanandjoe and lisa63,

Thanks for allaying my fears and for the advice.

lisa63,

That's a good idea you had about wearing one of the jackets on the plane. That should lighten my luggage and save on some pressing bills too.

I'm going to take a deep breath and try to relax and enjoy the cruise as I always do rather than concentrate on the clothing.

You have to understand that I'm all set for the Caribbean but don't have a clue as to what to do for Alaska.

I'll take some long and short sleeved shirts and a light waterproof jacket just in case it gets a little nippy.
