popsec
We're sailing on the Carnival Legen in 3 weeks and I read in my docs that they put a hold on your credit card if you're using that. It depends on the length of the cruise but for an 8 night cruise it's $400 pp. If you're paying with cash they require cash up front and when you reach the limit you're shut off until you put more in your account. With Celebrity you could check your account on the in-cabin tv or ask for a printout from the guest relations desk.
JoeyandDavid
popsec, I was told by a crew member on the Century.... or maybe it was at check-in i dont remember .. anyway they said they authorize everyday that days worth of charges.... so once they get a cut off notice i bet the passenger must get a note at that point..... but still dont know what would happen if they went over and the CCard company would say no way.... Shari2
I can't imagine someone going on a cruise and running up a big bill if they can't afford to pay it, but I'm sure it must have happened before. My DH always checks our bill on the TV and watches it. One day I was checking it, and I saw something on there from the florists shop on the ship. I asked DH if he got something at the florist shop because I thought it was a mistake. He had been trying to surprise me with a beautiful corsage for my birthday. Whoops...I accidentally saw the surprise. LOL I don't usually look at the account because DH handles the money in our family.
jbond
We were in the Caribbean one time and we made a large onshore purchase using the same credit card that we used for our sign and sail. Later that evening, we got a note asking us to visit the purser. The credit card company had closed out our card. Fortunately we had more than one card. I asked the purser how they knew about it and she said that they clear every account on a daily basis to make sure that funds are still available. When we got home we had several calls on the answering machine from the credit card company telling us that they suspected that our card had been stolen and that they had closed the account. We no longer use that company.

SKAOLboy
whats seems weird to me is why dont the CC companys just let you over draft? i've done it before, on more occastions then i care to annonce... isnt that how they make their money ? then again i can't see anyone going over their limit on a cruise... could this be why there have been so many jumpers lately? as for the cc company calling you when large and unsual perchases are made, i would think is a good thing, i can remember when i bought the gf a laptop and they sent me an email alert, text message and called my cell and my home phone....kinda nice to know someone is watching out for the little guy. gymbrat33
I always check my account on the T.V. in the cabin. They also send a notice to your cabin telling you that your balance is low and to deposit cash.
