avie
GM, Yes, we too are looking forward to getting up at some ungodly hour to watch the activities as the ship enters the Canal area. But hopefully we will be able to unite Betty with the small ship she christened when she was in high school in Rhode Island. Through the Panama Canal administration, we learned that the ship is indeed still in service. At the present time she is stationed at the Canal's Atlantic Port (the port through which we will approach the Canal), and is used to bring the "linesmen" aboard the ships traversing the Canal. As we get closer to our sailing date, I will be contacting the foreman at the Atlantic Port to see if it will be possible to have the "Tern" bring the linemen to the Summit. But that is something to try to work out early next year. Avie

avie
Joey, Selection for christening the Tern was most exclusive! No, the invitation was not based on some great infamous event for which Betty was known. Rather, Betty's best friend, classmate, and still best friend's family owned the shipyard at which the Tern was built. The then Canal Zone ordered four identical ships, and they needed persons to christen them. I guess they had gone through the family members several times for the various ships that were being built. (Among others, the shipyard was noted for steel-hulled vessels including ocean-going tugs, ferries between Cape Cod and Nantucket, etc.) -- So, to make a longer story short, Betty was asked to swing the old champagne bottle!! And we still have the silver commemorative plate! We may be joined on the cruise by her good friend, who is now looking in the archives for pictures of the construction of the Tern and the christening! avie
Joey, I was just lurking on another thread, and learned that you were supporting the medical profession today. Our very best to you, and keep us informed. Apparently, this is the week for contributing to the profession's upcoming cruise plans. Betty goes in tomorrow for a hip revision. (We all thought six dislocations -- three in the last two months -- were a little much. Again, our thoughts are with you. Avie

We have booked the ziplining in Puntarenas and in Huatulco we'll be ATV'ing. I wait until I'm 55 to do these daredevil excursions - go figure!!!
