Joanandjoe
We loved everything about Alaska other than the awful weather we had in Juneau, which cancelled the Mendenhal excursions and even the tram up the mountain. Taking a bus to a whale watching and otter boat, and seeing an eagle on every telephone pole was awesome, as was glacier viewing. But if we had to choose the best moment, it was a native dance recital in Sitka. Funny: we couldn't get into the highly advertised Russian folk dancing, but stumbled on the native recital on the recommendation of the tourist office. With the wonderful totem poles and raptor center as well as the dancing, Sitka was our favorite port. Tour guide joke: Guide: I guarantee that you'll see 100 eagles before lunch. Tourist: Isn't that a lot in a short time? Guide: I control when we eat, and no one gets lunch until we've seen 100 eagles. BTW, we saw more than 100 eagles in less than five minutes. Yes, whales are amazing, but seeing a sea otter floating on its back, eating shellfish, is equally amazing.

zebra
Oh Schatje that would be awesome!!! I'm ready to go to Alaska anytime! Joanandjoe - loved the joke. When we were fishing in Ketchikan the guide took all the smaller fish and threw them up in the air, one by one, each time a Bald Eagle would swoop down for the tasty morsel, a different Bald Eagle each time - I have amazing footage of this on my video camera. Joanandjoe
OK, how about a cruise that includes June 16, 2008. Maybe on the Statendam. Why then? G-d willing, our 40th anniversary!
PaulaW
I loved so many parts of Alaska. I guess one of my favorites was visiting the Hubbard Glacier and watching it calve!! The sound was incredible!
