Thanks for letting me know about that law. I don't even think I could skip a meal. There's so much food and drink all around the ship.

If you decide to do the railroad the food is expensive on board.

You can explore many of the towns on your own. We went to Sitka, attempting to see a highly-advertised Russian dance troupe. They were sold out, but a troupe of native Aleut dancers gave us a wonderful show. You can walk around the towns on your own, take local transit, and talk to the natives. All of this can be superb, cheap, and fun. Alaska is our last great wilderness, and the cruise helps you appreciate that.
