Cell phones on ships

I'm not sure if this has been discussed since I just joined last week or so. If it has then forget it and I will try to think of something else to complain about. I am wondering what the majority of the forum members think about the new plan for most lines to set up cell phone use when out at sea.

I personally am very opposed to it. I go on vacation to relax and especially on cruises when I am out in the Atlantic or down in the Caribbean sitting on a deck chair I don't need to hear people talking to their buddies back home. I just think it takes away from the atmosphere that we try to create when crusing. Just thought I'd throw it out to anyone. Your thoughts please.

There is certainly a place for cell phones. I just don't think that place is on a ship.

Cheers

When we went on our cruise last year..our 2 sons stayed at home with my sister...I took my cell phone with me in case of emergency...of course I had No service out to sea..and would have loved to have had it...I feel much better knowing they or any family member can get in touch with in the event their is a emergency...I agree with a cruise being for total relaxation..but I can go on a cruise anytime..I cannot replace a family member..and God forbid if something should happen and I didn't know until I got back....it may be too late

Thanks for the comments. I guess I should have worded it differently.

I should have said I am opposed to the usually useless chatter that

goes on with cell phones. Of course, we need and want to be able to

get in touch with loved ones at home. I do in fact keep my phone with me

for an emergency. I guess my gripe is with those folks who don't seem to

be able stay off of the things. But I asked and you answered. Thanks and

keep the comments coming.

Cheers

We got along without cell phones before and we still can. Ours comes with us but we still use e-mail to say hi to the family. If an emergency happens they can contact the ship we're on.

I don't mind cell phones as long as they are used with discretion. We had a cruise where another woman at the table had a family emergency. I had no problem with her phone ringing at dinner as she warned us and she left the dining room to take the call.

If people are respectful with their phones it's OK with me, if not they should be left at home.

On our Alaska cruise last year, the people in the next cabin continually kept going out on the balcony to use their cell phone, and of course, like most people who use the cell phone in public, talked very loud. They even woke us up in the morning several days while doing it. Personally I dislike them.

Don't get me on a rant about people who don't use car turn signals anymore because they have one hand on the wheel and one on the cell phone!

We have children and have gone on cruises every year without them (as well as some with them). We leave the ship's phone number with responsible adult siblings who could contact us if there was a problem. Also, all the ships have email and we can email back in forth. We don't NEED a cell phone.

Sorry. This one is a festering sore with me.
