A lot of today's cruise ships are diesel-electric, which means the diesel engine generates electricity which is used to propel the ship. This is why you don't generally see a big cloud of black smoke billowing out of the stack as they accelerate out of a port.

Don't quote me but on the last cruise the captain said that they only take on roughly 1/3 fuel each time at port. When possible. But the ship that was the Majesty could stay at sea for more than one month if they had to.

But I thought he said it could stay out longer
