Mebert
I've developed a new fondness for Nassau. Really? .. how so Mebert...... I got a chance to stay in Nassau when my niece got married. It was an opportunity for me to spend time with my brother, the real father of the bride, and a number of friends. We got a chance to visit some of the local spots, view a Junkanoo rehearsal near a section of the island called Fish Fry where there are loads of seafood restaurants, and lose some money at the Atlantis casino. My brother started us off with $5 dollars each. We stayed at The Breezes, a Super Clubs resort. The people at the resort just seemed to bend over backwards to please the guests. It turned out to be a land cruise. I guess when I think about Nassau now, I think about my family, friends and a good time, not to mention all you can eat and drink. mercedes
Nassau is another favorite. We have been there several times, staying at the Atlantis, what a wonderful resort that is  , and you are right Mebert, the people there aim to please and they succeed wonderfully. Mebert
mercedes, I so happy to see that I don't see Nassau through rose colored glasses. I hope we have a chance to talk about Nassau some time. How was it staying at the Atlantis? Right now, the Atlantis is so expensive that it's only a dream for me. I do enjoy visiting the aquarium and the casino though. Maybe if I didn't visit the casino I could afford to stay at the Atlantis for at lease one night or a couple of hours.   Did you know the islanders are not allowed to gamble in the casinos? mercedes
Mebert, I can't say enough about the Atlantis; it is one of the best resorts I have visited, very posh. We have stayed there a couple of times (four to be exact). My first time there I asked for room service to deliver cold watermelon several times during our vacation. My next reservation, there was a bowl of watermelon there for me and every visit since then, what more can you ask for. I felt like a movie star. I first went to Nassau with the kids back in 2000 and we had a wonderful time. The kids were not too happy with the food, but my husband and I are from South America, so we were familiar with the food there and thoroughly enjoyed it, so many restaurants with such delicious food. After persuading the kids to try different dishes, they were happy with the choices. The people there are very friendly; everyone has a smile, a nod or a greeting for you, especially when they knew from our accents that we were from around the area. All this talk about Nassau is making me think about making a reservation for my birthday in January.
Gregswife
St. Thomas would get my vote. St. Maarten is my favorite for jewelry buying though - if you are there - check out Helena's Jeweler's....
Mebert
mercedes, That truly sounds like extraordinary service on the part of Atlantis. If you do book Nassau in January, I understand that one of the Junkanoo parades takes place on January 1. Two of my future land vacations incluce Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Junkanoo in Nassau. If you do go in January, I hope you and your family have a great time.
KeithnRita
We were there this year on Jan 2, a day after the parade. They portable grand stands were being disassembled by a few workers. Most of the shops were closed, or would be opened up later, according to one of shop keepers who was opened. She said most sleep in very late the next day after partying late into the night. This is a photo of one of floats parked on a side street. Mebert
Keith & Rita, Thanks for the photo. It just game me a very pleasant flashback of the very, very small Junkanoo parade that the Breezes put on for thier guests. I hope to meet you and mercedes in Nassau one day either on December 26 or January 1. We should have a ball.
Joanandjoe
We've only been to Cozumel and Grand Cayman in the Caribbean, and they were so different from each other that we wouldn't want to choose one. (I, Joe, have been to Puerto Rico on business, and loved San Juan, but that's not the same as being there on vacation.) As for Bermuda and the Bahamas, we've been to both, and they both have some good points (especially Bermuda). However, both are in the Atlantic Ocean and neither is in the Caribbean, so they don't qualify for best Caribbean island no matter how much you like them. If you want a really great New Year's parade right here in the Northeast, the Mummer's Parade in Philadelphia is fantastic.
PrincessOne
I have a few favorites...lol Eastern Caribbean...not sure don't really care a ton for St. Thomas or St. Maarten...they are good for shopping however...Grand Turk...would be my favorite...until it gets over built... Southern Caribbean...St. Lucia is my all time favorite Western...I Love Ocho Rios Jamaica...always tour with Peat Taylor when there. Private Island...Have to say Half Moon Cay is the best...the sand is like talcum powder (I am comparing it to Castaway Cay, Labadee and Coco Cay)
