TheSkipper
Hi Gang, In all off our cruises we have never used Port Canaveral to embark. Looking for any insights and tips. We will be staying in Orlando at a timeshare the week prior to our March cruise on the Glory and will have a rental car. One major question is should I keep the car and turn it in somewhere in or near Port Canaveral, or would it make sense to return it to where we picked it up and the Orlando airport and arrange some other form as transport?? Any comments, tips, experiences, etc. will be appreciated.
sailingrose
Hey Skipper, Port Canaveral is the best cruise port to get in and out of. Far less congestion than any other in our opinion. I live about 50 minutes from the port. I think there is a Hertz by Port Canaveral and you could turn the car in there. Parking is $12 per day so it would probably pay to turn the car in. Many that I know have used Arts Shuttle to get to the airport after their cruises and have reported no issues. Sorry don't remember the cost but they do have a website. Longboysfan
My friends did the same thing a few years back - from Hertz or Avis. They had a shuttle service to the ship from the car drop off. Was 5 minutes from the pier. Look them up online.
Jimmykaboots
Port Canaveral, that sounds familiar. Which state or city is it in or near? I have may been there, or maybe I'm confusing it with Carnival Cruises.
Gregswife
Jimmy, it is Florida and where Kennedy Space Center (NASA) is located. We have sailed from there twice.
teacp
We also have sailed from there. No problems at all
Mebert
The Skipper, I saild from Port Canaveral once. It took about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get to the pier from the airport. I think I paid something like $30 round trip then. The cruise line arranged for the service. If your car rental company can arrange to take the car at the pier, I think that's the way to go. Otherwise, it's taking a bus from the airport.
cruiseduo
I arrived at Port Canaveral this morning and am spoiled because our daughter picked us up on took us home. However, I would suggest that you leave your rental in Orlando and arrange round trip transportation to and from Orlando Airport. Many, many, many people on our cruise this week did just that and I know it's an easy task.
hazelson
Check out Fort Christmas - it's between Orlando and Port Canaveral - what an interesting place!!! We did the reverse - picked up the car from the port and returned it to the airport a few days later. Smooth!
TheSkipper
Thanks for the recommendations Pat and Howard. I think I'm going to go with your idea. My wife's sister and her husband are coming down a couple days prior to the sailing and staying in our timeshare in Orlando. No way four adults and cruise luggage are going to fit in a rental carl. I think we will head back to the airport in the car and put them in a shuttle or cab and have them meet us there and all set up shuttle transfers to Port Canaveral. Unless my brother-in-law wants to rent his own car, Doubt that. Anyway thanks to all. Looking forward to a new port adventure.
