The best time to Cruise South America?

My in-laws are trying to get us all together for a cruise around South America. I know the seasons are different down there, but does anyone have experience with traveling S.A. (not the carib part, but Brazil, Peru, etc.). When is the best time to go?

The seasons in South America are the reverse of ours. January is the height of summer down there, which is why that is when the cruiselines go there, late fall to early spring. The cruise lines then reposition those ships to Alaska and Europe. Rio de Janeiro for Carnival in February is popular for cruising.
