PJnVA
Cheryl, treatment for ruptured aortic aneurysms has come a long long way in 30 years. My father was diagnosed with a dissecting aortic aneurysm that ruptured back in 1977. The surgery they did on him made medical history, cooling his body to 60 degrees and draining all his blood then replacing the ruptured part of the aorta with a Dacron graft. Essentially he was dead on the table for over half an hour while they did the graft. At the time his chance for survival was less than 5%. Not only did he survive this surgery but his recovery time amazed his doctors. He was back to work full-time in less than 3 months. He had 2 subsequent dissecting aneurysms and surgery and passed away in 1979 after complications from a final surgery. These procedures were so new and miraculous that it was front page news here in the DC area and made many newspapers worldwide, even local TV and Good Morning America. I think this procedure they used on my father way back when is now standard practice.
