On the lines that I've been on, I haven't seen much of a difference. The food is good on all of the lines, but there seems to be a trend to have less choices.

This is a situation of it being a matter of tastes. We have had some of our best and worst meals aboard Princess. We sailed on the Carnival Spirit and the food was really good. Nnother site was asking who was more important - the CD or the executive chef. I think the chef wins hands down. You can work around a bad CD, but if the food is bad, it's what people remember from the cruise. I think you're going to find someone who loves or hates the food on every cruise.

We agree that it's a matter of taste; but it's also a matter of how much the cruise lines spend on food. We've been on a couple of upscale cruise lines, Regent and Windstar; and the food on both was significantly better (particularly Regent) than on the two mass market lines, Celebrity (X) and HAL, on which we've sailed.

As between X and HAL, probably two thirds of cruisers like X better than HAL. We're in the minority. We found X's food to be saltier and more bland than on HAL, and we don't like either salty or bland. We also thought that X food did not reflect the areas in which the ships sailed: they have the same menu fleet wide. At least on HAL, there are some dishes to remind you that you're in the Caribbean, or Alaska, or Canada/New England.

Considering how little the lines spend per passenger per day, it's amazing they do as well as they do.

Food is subjective of course. We find each line does one thing well. RCI makes amazing cookies and bread. Princess had better quality food overall. Celebrity had great beef, etc. We seem to manage around the lesser menu nights somehow even making special requests to the head waiter. Never had a problem getting what I want. $$$

I agree Charlie that the Executive Chef is far more important than the CD. On 1 ship we prefer one EC over the other so we always hope for the one we like. His food just is more to our taste.

I agree about fewer choices Howard. Cost cutting strikes again of course.

Based on the lines we've cruised, this is the order we would put them in overall all food quality. Remember this is just our opinion as everyone has different tastes.

1) Celebrity

2) HAL

3) Carnival

4) Princess

5) RCI

6) NCL

As some have suggested,it depends on one's taste buds. My wife for instance does not like seafood or spiced food of any kind except maybe battered cod once in a while. I on the other hand dislike lamb, duck, veal and certain seafoods. That does not leave a large choice on the menu! We favour basic 'meat and potato' dishes. Sometimes I yearn for the simple English food such as plain old fish and chips or sausages and mash or even toad in the hole! I'm led to believe that in the Golden Lion Pub on the QM2 they do serve some of these dishes during lunch time hours but not in the evening. Guess We're gonna have to book Cunard next time!!!!

Regards,

James.
