I guess its not totally fair to say by sea. We've been to Hawaii on a land vacation already. The next time we go there, it will be on a cruise. The first time was great, but it was 28 years ago (on our honeymoon). It's just about time to get there

My DH and I have done both. We did the land vacation first and visited Maui and Honolulu for 10 days and had a lot of time to linger and enjoy, but with a cruise you definitely are on a schedule, although you get to visit more islands (5) - but with 5 days in a row at sea, that was a bit much.

You don't have to do the roundtrip from the west coast with 5 days at sea going and coming back. NCL sails interisland 7 days cruise with no "at sea" days, including two island overnights (Maui and Kauai). They also do a 10 night cruise with 9 days in Hawaiin ports, including an overnight the first night in Honolulu with a 6pm departure the 2nd day, and only 1 at sea day.

I'd say, do one of these to get a feel for each island, and then you can go back on a land vacation on the one you like best.

Hawaii is a popular destination.. and with the ability to Island hop affordable the question becomes:

Would you rather do Hawaii by land or on a cruise?

We did a 10 day cruise (Norwegian) from Honolulu and then spent 3 more days in Honolulu after the cruise was over (it was a cruise/land deal through the travel agency). Only "bummer" was no casino. Had we sailed from San Diego to Hawaii on Royal we would have had a casino.

Yes, island hopping can be tedious. But this was such a great, inexpensive way of seeing Hawaii. I'm not sure if we would have been able to afford the same (food, transporation, lodging, entertainment, etc.) if we repeated this by land, by ourselves. The three days in Honolulu after the 10 day cruise was costly (food, entertainment, car rental).
