Panama Canal tours

We were on a tour that we booked through Carnival Miracle, but check ShoreTrips to see what they offer. We were also fortunate in that no other ferries or ships were going through the canal on the day that we went through so we didn't have any waits. (There are strict regulations as to time of day and direction of travel.)

I don't recall just how long it took to go through the locks. Some of the locks take a little longer (than others) to "empty" and "refill".

I was so amazed that the canal was constructed in the early 1900's (and still standing and operating) that I never really paid attention to time (or weather). The ferry was a double decker with an overhead covering for those that didn't want to be in the direct sun. There was seating in the front (no overhead covering) and seating in the back. The bottom level was the bathroom and "dining" room. You went slow enough to be able to take great pictures.

Again, this was a once in a lifetime chance for the four of us beause we do not know if we will be back to Panama.

When we cruise the Panama Canal the Jewel will only be going thru the Gatun locks. RC offers two tours which will take us over to the Miroflores locks, one by ferry and one by train. Both are all day tours - 7 hours in length. Has anyone had any experience with either of these tours and can give advice on choosing the train or the ferry. Would like to know the pros and cons on either.

HELLO,

We will be on the Jewel, 17NOV08 , I Checked RC site for tours. There not posted yet. Where did you get your info?

thanks

The tours aren't posted yet for our cruise but you can read all about them anyway junusblack.

First, go to RC's web site.

From the blue drop downs on top of the page go to Before you Board

Then go to Shore & Land excursions.

Look down that page to Researching shore & land excursions.

Go to ports of call then click Panama Canal. All the excursions will come up.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your cruise - we will be right behind you.
