We have never been upgraded at the dock.

We've had a number of upgrades, though...we have a fantastic cruise agent we've used since we started cruising, and he does as much as he can for us. The last GREAT upgrade he got us was in August when we went to Hawaii. We paid for 4 inside cabins and he got us upgraded to 4 balcony cabins.

Other 'upgrades' that come to mind...he asked us to change our vacation days twice and told us he would make it worth it to us. The first time he upgraded us to an upper deck, and got us a $1000 onboard credit. That was our first time in Alaska and that $1000 paid for all our excursions.

The second time he asked us to change our vacation days, and we did, we got the cruise totally for free, and he upgraded us to a higher deck.

I have cruised on Valentine's day - my girlfriend and I wore shirts full of hearts, heart earrings, etc...and the crew treated us like their valentines!!!

As for the upgrade question, once Princess upgraded me from a balcony to a junior suite prior to sailing on a short coastal CA cruise. The ultimate upgrade came recently on the Monarch when I was moved to the Royal Suite for the last two days of a four day cruise - after the prior occupants left the ship.

Sea days or port days....I love long sea days....but, if I have port days, I love to have them alternate with a sea day...that's really ideal for me.

Choosing a cruise - itinerary or ship...more for the itinerary but, in reality for me, it's often for the crew, more than for any other reason.

Highlight of Alaska cruise for me - absolutely the scenery was fabulous....but meeting with sex crimes detectives in Alaska was the best experience!!!!
