JoeyandDavid
When a cruise ship is first christened, a common ceremonial figure is the ‘Godmother’, which is usually a dignitary or a celebrity. For the launch of Royal Caribbean’s biggest and newest ship yet in April, the company is launching a search across the United Kingdom for a Godmother of the people. Five-time Olympic gold medalist for Britain Sir Steve Redgrave will head up the search for the Godmother, with nominees being asked to submit information all this week. Godmothers of Royal Caribbean ships past have included Whoopi Goldberg, Steffi Graff, Gloria Estefan and Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway. President and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean International Adam Goldstein says, “Independence of the Seas is part of a family of the largest and most innovative ships in the industry, enjoyed by families and young people on holiday around the world. As our commitment to the UK and Europe grows in line with demand for our cruises, and to mark the arrival of Independence of the Seas into Southampton, we wanted to create an extra-ordinary inaugural celebration to showcase our commitment to the UK market. Our search for a British Godmother who demonstrates an extraordinary passion for young people is just that.†
