Alaska Cruise Questions

Hi everyone. I am new to this board.

My new husband and I decided last minute to take a cruise on HAL to Alaska in July so we need alot of help to get all the plannings together. We're not using a TA because we are using hotel reward points to cover the cruise and will only be paying for air. I do have a few questions on the rest of the logistics so if anyone can provide some recommendation it will be greately appreciated!

1. What is the best option, bus vs. train, as transportation from Seward to Anchorage (I assume we need to book this on our own)?

2. Cruise leaves from Vancouver but we're thinking about flying into Seattle to spend a couple days there. Is train the best way to go from Seattle to Vancouver? And what is the best option to go from train station to the port, taxi or bus?

3. If we want to book excursions on our own instead of through the cruise line, what is a good website to book these?

These are the main ones I have right now, I am sure I'll have other questions in the future. Thanks!

hmmm, after looking at the excursions available through the cruise ship, I do see that transfer from Seward to Anchorage can be purchased as an excursion. So will it be better to book a bus/train on our own or easier through HAL? And I assume prepaid transfer voucher means you booked the excursion prior to the cruise???

Hi Sharon and welcome to logo140p.jpg

Most definitely book the Alaska Railroad from Seward to Anchorage. You can buy the tickets on board your ship. We cruised Alaska in 2001 on the HAL Statendam.

Another piece of advise, try to get a seat in one of the dining cars with the wrap around windows. You will see a lot of wild life.

Sharon David said that the service between Seattle and Vancouver is done thru a connecting bus service which requires additional fares...

Had you ever thought about a one way rental car?

Yes, rental car is definitely on our option list. I just want to check to see if there are other better alternatives.
