55ChevyLady
that is an interesting observation.. and consequently porters are going to be getting stiffed on tips...LOL
deb1220
I wouldn't want to do it at embarkation - too cumbersome but I considered it last cruise on debarkation but the DH wouldnt go for it....but wished he had after we had hassles trying to find which "truck" had our luggage in San Juan - language barrier and all. Joanandjoe
We've never tried to manhandle our own luggage, either embarking or disembarking from a ship. It might save some time, but it's not worth the shlepping. Also, I doubt that will ever pack lightly enough to do it. Even for our river cruise, when we had one bag each, we were happy to let the cruise line handle the luggage.
rogue
I can't picture doing it either. I'm never in that much of a hurray to get off the ship.
TheSkipper
Posted this question because there seems to be a bit of a trend in this direction, but I think it will be a long time before it becomes anywhere close to universal. We, so far, have not done it either way, and do not plan to in the foreseeable future.
DebbieandJerry
We use porter service at airport curb side check in. In Tucson, it costs $2/bag to have this service (tip on top of that), but you are checked in and at the gate in a matter of minutes. We use the porter service at Embarkation. Hard to not use it when the porter is at the curb when you drive up. Even though we are not in a hurry to go home, we pretty much schlep our own luggage from the main luggage inspection area to the curb where we wait for the next taxi to take us to the airport. sailingrose
We carry on and off for a 3 day cruise but for a longers one......never tried it and don't think we will.
cruisetarp
No, really can't imagine dragging all that luggage ourselves, unless I seriously cut back on my packing.
TheSkipper
Cruise Question of the Day: Do you sometimes stay on board at a port of call?
cruisetarp
We often stay on the ship at a port, especially if we have been to that port several times and done all the "must see" things. The ship is so nice and quiet when everyone is off. This December we plan on staying on the ship in Grand Caymen. Have already been there 3 times and it is a tender port so for us it is not worth the trouble of getting off.
