JoeyandDavid
If you want to really dress up, go for it. Isn't the cruise all about you?! it is .. but when you sail longer cruises it IS a deal breaker...at least for us
jbond
I have a problem with dress codes that don't differentiate between casual and smart casual. Princess did it a few years ago, Celebrity has adopted it and RCI still has it in their brochures, but don't appear to have it on board. We like to dress. I take a tux and a suit. On our last RCI cruise, 29 days, they only had formal and casual on the ship. Many men had suits, jackets, blazers etc, but it was a totally uncoordinated dress code. Despite what the lines are doing, we will continue to dress to our standards. When we become dinosaurs, we'll look for a different form of vacation. By the way, I have nothing against jeans on casual nights, I sometimes wear them myself.
teacp
I see nothing wrong with dress jeans on casual nights............Joey you would actually not sail on Celebrity because people are wearing jeans on casual night?

Jeans in the dining room IN THE EVENING is not the expierence we choose to have (wearing or watching others..).. so yeah Maria .. I guess we would... jacketwatch
The question becomes where will you go if X doesn't reverse this change? None of the other mass market lines would be an option. I think even HAL has changed as well. That leaves the very expensive luxury lines and IIRC Regent is always smart casual. Cunard I assume folows dress codes but of course their area is limited. DebbieandJerry
Personally, I will not allow "dress code" or how others dress be the deciding factor on whether I book a cruise on a certain ship (or not). Celebrity is about the top of the line that we can afford. We are extremely happy with everything that Celebrity has to offer. For me, someone who wears jeans to dinner will not keep me from sailing on that line. As I've said in many posts, we like to dress up. Maybe it's because we don't dress up in Tucson. But, having said that. We also like the idea that we might not HAVE to wear formal dresses and tuxes and can get by with something else. Would definitely create more space in the suitcase if I didn't have to pack the "ultra formal wear" (shoes and all).
JoeyandDavid
The question becomes where will you go if X doesn't reverse this change? It may become a reality where we sail less often but on upscale lines... Personally, I will not allow "dress code" or how others dress be the deciding factor on whether I book a cruise on a certain ship (or not). And Deb it shouldn't this would be an individual decision.. obviously we all cruise for different reasons... one of the big reason we cruise is the over all ambiance in the evenings ... we love to see people dressed... we love to dress.. without the clothes its just another cruiseline... you know? lashl
We don't like the trend but it is now a way of life on cruise ships. If we are dining with family or good friends the meal is still enjoyable and what others wear usually does not bother me. We prefer to dress up and enjoy others that do the same. We cruise to relax and have fun so what others wear on casual night probably will not bother us. Now if the food or service is no good, that's another story! PATJUD
I would think that airline restrictions on luggage also plays a part in these decisions by the cruise lines. Men's suits and jackets do take up more space in the luggage.
