JoeyandDavid
Joey, I don't like the idea of jeans at dinner, but I think you're over reacting. Once fellow diners are sitting down, you don't see their pants anyway. If you otherwise enjoy X, why let a few slobs ruin your experience? Joe that is the problem .. not only are they allowing /relaxing the dress code they are also eliminating "Specialty Dining" which was a favorite.. no doubt next to come is "Anytime dining".. if these things come to pass.. we will abandon cruise vacations all together...we can take the amount of money we are spending on our cruises and do an outstanding job on land vacations... longer more upscale and cheaper... It is very possible our "Connie" cruise may be our last... especially if ther are no lines to offer what we enjoy...Here is an excerpt of what was in the new Captains club news letter.. One of the biggest changes to dining with Celebrity has nothing to do with the food. For long-tine cruisers like you, who truly appreciate the ambiance of life on board an ocean-going vessel, we are reviving one of cruising's most romantic traditions beginning on August 1, 2008 - formal dining. With up to three formal evenings on each cruise, you can celebrate in the style and warmth of our exceptional services. Even those nights not designated as "formal" will include a certain elegance, as we phase out informal dress in our main dining rooms and specialty restaurants, replacing it with "Smart Casual and Above", a guideline that will add to the sophistication of each night out. Of course, those who'd rather not dress for dinner, are more than welcome to come and enjoy the expanded menus in the many casual dining options on board each ship, where you'll find everything from pizza to sushi. Joanandjoe
Joey, as I read the announcement, they're not phasing out specialty dining; they're eliminating "informal" dressing. They'll still have the specialty restuarants. Indeed, the new monster size Solstice X ships (for me, 2,800 PAX is much too big) will have about 10 specialty restaurants. I hope your right... but right now We will be in "Wait and See mode".... if it turns out postive ....then no harm no foul!!
rogue
I've never cruised Celebrity, so I'm curious. How did people dress for smart casual dining? Did they wear sport coats? How many of the dinners were designated "Informal"? As I read the excerpt, they are doing away with "Informal" and will just have "Smart Casual" and "Formal". They will have this also in their "Specialty Restaurants" so they don't say that they are being phased out. I suspect that, if anything, the cruise lines will have more specialty restaurants rather than less.
KeithnRita
Howard, our last Celebrity cruise was on the Constellation for 10 days. They had 3 formal days, 3 informal, and 4 casual days. Informal required a jacket for the men, with or without a tie. The extra formal night was for New Year Eve.
rogue
I see. So people will be dressing down a bit on the days there used to be informal. Now I understand.
JoeyandDavid
I see. So people will be dressing down a bit on the days there used to be informal. Now I understand. Howard for us Casual has always been ... slacks and a sport shirt.. as long as it had a collar and sleeves.. Informal for us meant a suit or jacket and Tie Formal meant a Tux That is how we perceived it...
cruisetarp
Anyone else get a "stock" answer from Celebrity yet. Seems that the people in Customer Service who write these replies don't bother reading the web site. They say the dress codes state that Gentlemen should wear PANTS (not torn or ripped) on smart casual nights.....no mention of Jeans. Lots of blah, blah, blah, blah blah and once again proves that the right hand has no idea what the left hand is doing. Waste of my time writing to them for all I can see. I understand that the change will also change your outlook on cruising, Joey, but I think that you will also find a decreasing number of land-based vacations that will be lowering their standards also. As future generations get older, their ideas of style will become the norm. I, personaly, would not want to deprive myself of something I love because of this change. If nothing else, change is inevitible.
Peddler
Good Morning; Well here is my take on the subject; Being an old Texas redneck, I like jeans and boots. As a mater of fact, one will see starched jeans a starched western cut shirt a bolo tie and a jacket in weddings and funerals around here and it is most likely considered formal. I don't and won't wear a tux, but that's me. I think that gentlemen that wear a tux and the women that dress accordingly are wonderful and look remarkable and hope they continue to do so. I do wear a black suit for "Formal Night" and keep it on for the duration of the evening. A cruise is the only time this suit is worn. Funny thing is, up until 2004 for my first cruise, I didn't even own a jacket or slacks. If one likes the formal (tux etc) for sure wriite the company and express your opinion. I think it's really part of the cruise experience.. So as you can see I like to see formal, I just don't see me in a tux. (nothing against Joey for sure) Later Jim
