jbond
Unless you want to fork over the bucks for first or business class, you might not be able to afford more than one suitcase (less than 50 lbs at that!). It is becoming very hard to meet all the cruise line "requirements" with what the airlines are doing now to survive. You don't have to fly business or first class, you can pay extra for luggage. It varies by airline, but even with United it is $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second. An additional $40 pp for 100lbs of luggage. If you are flying international you are still allowed two bags each included with the ticket. We just got back from a 33 day trip, 29 days on board the Splendour of the Seas. On the return journey our four bags weighed 48lbs each. My wife took seven formal gowns and a large amount of semi/casual clothes. I took a tux, white dinner jacket, suit and a lot of casual clothes. I also took three pair of western dress boots. We only used the ship's laundry for my dress shirts. The airlines may be changing the rules, but I'm not convinced that it should change the way you cruise.
cruisetarp
Celebrity has removed the word JEANS from their description of Smart Casual and Above wear on their cruise. Now it reads that gentlemen should wear pants (no holes or rips).

cruisetarp
Oh, I didn't realize that Joey. Thought I'd found some new information. I guess we will have to wait for you and David to get back from your cruise to see what the story really is.

JoeyandDavid
To follow up... on the mercury cruise.. i had the opportunity to discuss this matter with our Maître d' As it turned out they were having meetings that week with a corporate official.. and one of the topics was the "correct" procedure for dealing with guests who violate the dress policy... he said that most of the staff wish the guests would not wear jeans at night and agree with traditional guidelines.. they also said that although they disagree with the new standard of sporty casual.. they did see where it was a better alternative than to allow jeans.. more people are willing to abide by the casual than were willing to adhere to informal nights.. so i left my week long discussion believing that jeans will be actively discouraged at night..
