It's not one particular thing but I never expected to meet some many cruisers who have become life long friends. Our cruise group comes to mind - there are 8 of us scattered all over the US but we still manage to get together at least once every 3 months for a long weekend of fun and catching up.

On our Veendam cruise in Jan of 2000 we met Al Hrabosky, The Mad Hungarian--as he was known as in his playing days, and some of the St Louis Cardinal baseball players on the ship. Al, who is their TV color commentator invited us to join them on their next group cruise. As it turned out, we were unable to because of a conflict with our schedule. He also made a video for our grandson.

Easy. On our Tahitian cruise I booked a forward facing cabin. Big mistake. The seas got a bit rough and my wife became ill on our first night into the cruise. She said, and it really upset me, "I don't think I can take this boat." What to do with 9 nights left? :sad2: We had to see the ships MD and I requested for a different cabin, even if we had to downgrade but the ship was full. A crew member knew how ill she was and on day two or three saw her asleep in one of the public areas because she could not take our cabin. Later that morning we heard our names paged. Yikes I thought, this can't be good. Well this crew member, Joao from Portugal found out that an amidships sutite had become available and he told an officer of her plight. They paged us to see if we wanted the the new cabin. W/i 15 minutes Joao had organized our move and we were in this new location just like that! He saved our trip, I gave him a nice tip and also wrote a letter about him to Princess.

I do remember him. He had that intimidating way when he was on the mound. Once we were on a land vacation in Hawaii and saw an NBA player, Irvin Johnson (not magic Johnson) of the Sonics. He taled, gave us a pic and was a gentleman.

Meeting Marcy and James - our best friends.

Back in 1993, a local radio D.J. and Travel Agent "were dating". They put together a themed 60's cruise to the Mexican Riviera. All of the folks that were going on this cruise met at a restaurant beforehand as a "get to know you". Being the social people that we are, we befriended a number of people at the gathering (but not Marcy and James).

I had asked a co-worker if she and her husband wanted to go on this vacation with us. So, here we are on the Jubilee, at a table for 6. Marcy and James were the other couple. The three couples hit it off beautifully.

A few months down the road, the same D.J. and Travel Agent contacted everyone for a follow-up, share your pictures. Each of us would write our name and phone number on the pictures that other people took and we would make copies for those folks.

Turns out that they were also using this as an opportunity to see if folks wanted another group cruise. Didn't take but a $50 per person deposit to hold the cabin space. This time, we made sure that Marcy and James were in a cabin next to ours and at our table. We've been best friends ever since.

So without a doubt THE BEST THING that has happened to us is our best friends: Marcy and James.

A young lady named Ivana (a bar waitress) really took to my husband, on our cruise to Alaska. She called him Grandfather (because of his beard) then immediately apologized. She was in tears as she explained how much she missed her family - especially her dear grandfather - but she thought Hugh might take offense. He did not - of course LOL.

We don't drink much on a cruise but she seemed to be everywhere we were on the ship - and everytime she saw Hugh she gave him a great big hug!

We often forget how young some of these great people are - and that they miss their loved ones so much!
