Hey everyone... I'm back, and i have a very important question for all of you regarding life, working on a cruise ship!

My 19 year old cousin is about to embark on a new stage on his life, and one of his options are working on a ship for 6 months or so, he is canadian and I am wondering how it is, and if good, what cruise line?

Please Help

JB :)

Welcome back. I really have no idea as to benefits, etc. It sounds as if this sort of thing is cool for a 19 yr. old in terms of adventure, etc. but as for a career I would doubt it unless he can work his way up to officer status. JM2C.

Hey JB

I really think any experiences that a young person can expose them-self to in a safe and secure matter can only be a plus...all experiences that your cousin or you for that matter experience now...will help in ways you may not understand until later in your lives..

It is after all only six months... and as long as your cousin is a healthy lad.. and is willing .. I would say go for it.. I must agree with Jacketwatch though unless he really wants this as a career and strives for promotions... it could be a very difficult life .. however with dedication and desire he could very easily have a marvelous career that will enable him to see places he might not get to see otherwise..

Just my thoughts...

I was a VISTA volunteer right out of college (Peace Corps in the U.S.). I have to tell you that that was THE BEST experience I ever had. When I finished that commitment, I was a firm believer that every person who finished high school, vocational school and/or college should volunteer for at least one year.

Boy, had I known about cruise ship positions, I would have changed my mind immediately about VISTA. What an incredible opportunity for such a short duration of time. At least that's how I would look at it.

It's a lot of fun for someone who has no ties to a particular place. It does matter what position you're taking, but the choices for Americans are pretty decent. It's hard work, but it's good experience...and a great way to see the world.

My thoughts too. There does seem to be a lot of Canadians on the entertainment staff crew.

Hi,

I currently work on cruise ships as an internet mgr. And I started as a sales asst. in the gift shop. If you have questions, you can email me at mrgstowers@helloworld.com or check out the book that I wrote about it. Straight Up, No Sippin' - by G. Stowers. Google the title or go direct to the site at [Link Removed]. Nothing is sugar coated in there unlike the material that is published by the cruise lines. Good luck.

-G
